The first consignment of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine has arrived in the UK.

It has been taken to a central hub at an undisclosed location, and will now be distributed to hospital vaccination centres around the UK.

The UK has ordered 40 million doses - enough to vaccinate 20 million people.

England's deputy chief medical officer said the first wave of vaccinations could PREVENT UP TO 99% of Covid-19 hospital admissions and deaths.

Speaking to BBC News, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam said that would be possible if everyone on the first priority list took the vaccine and it was highly effective.

He said it was key to distribute the vaccine "as fast" and at the "highest volume" as possible, but he acknowledged there would need to be some flexibility in the list.

The world’s first supplies of approved Covid-19 vaccine arrive in Britain today, it can be revealed.

A refrigerated truck was seen leaving the Pfizer manufacturing plant in Puurs, Belgium, on Thursday morning, thought to be en route to the UK. Earlier, deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam said the delivery was arriving in Britain “within hours”. “I do mean hours not days,” he added shortly before 9.30am.

Centrica Clears Final Regulatory Hurdle For Direct Energy SaleMon, 30th Nov 2020 14:58Alliance News(Alliance News) - Energy supplier Centrica PLC said Monday it has cleared its final hurdle for the sale of its North American business to NRG Energy Inc.Centrica in July announced its plans to sell Direct Energy for USD3.63 billion in cash, as part of an ongoing business restructuring programme to focus back on the UK and Ireland businesses. In early October, NRG received notice from the US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission granting early termination of a waiting period for the sale.NRG was only waiting approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission - which Centrica noted on Monday the US firm has now received. The disposal increases the long-term strength of Centrica's balance sheet, it had previously said, with proceeds intended to be used to reduce net debt significantly and to make a contribution to the defined benefit pension schemes.Shares in Centrica were 3.4% lower in London on Monday at 44.22 pence each.By Paul McGowan; paulmcgowan@alliancenews.com
