- InterContinental Hotels Group reports a solid performance in the third quarter, leveraging its global scale to drive 3.8% net system growth and 1.3% RevPAR growth.

Highlights:

- Global Q3 comparable RevPAR1 up 1.3%, and up 1.8% Q3 YTD

- Enhanced global scale: 7k rooms opened in Q3, increasing net system size 3.8% YoY to 754k rooms

- Building future growth: 19k rooms signed; highest for Q3 since 2008, taking pipeline to 230k rooms

Chief executive Richard Solomons said: "We delivered a solid performance in the third quarter, leveraging our global scale to drive 3.8% net system growth and 1.3% RevPAR growth.

"We remain focused on executing our commercial strategy to drive competitive advantage. This includes broadening the footprint of our global portfolio of brands, across which we drove our highest signings for eight years, including our best ever third quarter performance for Greater China.

"Enhancements to IHG Rewards Club, including the roll-out of our preferential member pricing initiative, 'Your Rate', continue to drive excellent results. This, together with our initiatives to utilise digital innovation to enhance all stages of the guest journey, means we will continue to generate more customised and informed interactions with our guests and deliver improved returns for owners.

"Looking ahead, while industry RevPAR growth has slowed, the fundamentals for the sector, and particularly for IHG, remain compelling. This, combined with our winning strategy and the strength of our cash generative business model, will enable us to drive sustainable growth into the future. Despite the uncertain environment in some markets, we remain confident in the outlook for the remainder of the year."

Morgan Stanley downgrade probably to blame. It forsees downturn in global hotel biz cycle, and has a target price of 3100p or disaster case 2000p! Are they trying to precipitate the downturn?

It appears (???) that the US hotels giant Marriott International Friday announcement, that it had completed its takeover of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, has been the cause of this morning share price dip. This creates the world’s largest hotel company.

Shouldn't they make a statement? Even if only to deny rumours. The share price is soaring!

Hi TB. The share price graph looking a bit extended now. But I'm not complaining. This is a great share. Perhaps there is another possible buyer? Or maybe people are just factoring in weak Sterling, signs of emerging market revival, and continued growth of IHG..... Great fun.

Extracts from the Daily Mail on Take Over rumour

Talks are said to be in the early stages, according to the Sunday Times, after bankers were sent to China to discuss the deal with Anbang. But the insurance firm has not yet made any formal approach to IntercontinentalR30;.

Based on last week’s closing price, Intercontinental has a market capitalisation of £6.3billion and it is thought any potential deal would value the business at £7billion.

Parts of the statement read well at first sight but not all is well. The rise in revpar you quote is "like" revpar at constant currency. Actual (reported) revpar is down, partly due to strong US dollar. Also the additions to rooms are good, but in Q1 there was a net reduction in rooms.
I'm not denying there are good points, (eg the Easter benefit which will come in Q2) and the re-opening of the Barclay in New York. Overall I'm a holder as their strategy seems to work, but I anticipate more weakness due to macro-economic issues, especially after capital return.
All just my personal observations and opinions.....good luck to all

- InterContinental Hotels reports a good start to the year, driving RevPAR up 1.5% against the background of weak oil markets and the earlier timing of Easter, which affected several of its markets.

The shift in timing of Easter into Q1 had an adverse impact across the industry, especially in the Americas and Europe, which the group expects to reverse in Q2.

Chief executive Richard Solomons said: "We continued our focus on building and leveraging scale where it matters, signing rooms into our pipeline at the fastest rate since 2008. We also strengthened our position in the rapidly growing boutique segment, signing the first Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants property outside the Americas, in Amsterdam, and opening and signing a record number of rooms for our Hotel Indigo brand.

"At the same time, we continue to evolve and enhance our leading loyalty programme, IHG Rewards Club. This week we announced that IHG Rewards Club members will be offered exclusive, preferential rates when they book through our direct channels. This new benefit further strengthens our loyalty offer by helping us build deeper relationships with our most loyal guests, whilst driving more direct bookings to our hotels.

"Looking ahead, despite economic and political uncertainty in some markets, current trading trends and the momentum behind our brands give us confidence for the rest of the year."

Share consolidation should NOT effect share price. Special dividend is from sale of assets. In simple terms the reduction reflects the new reduced asset base as a % of the previous asset base.
