I see Cobham, like Inmarsat, has now joined the ranks of those companies keen to go private. What irks me is that such a move eliminates the possibility of existing shareholders enjoying any potential recovery in fortunes.Meanwhile, the management (at least in part) responsible for failing to successfulyl handle the storm continue their existence under the not so public eyes of private capital. This is despite calling on shareholders to provide emergency backing at times of crisis. It’s the self same management that have overtly let shareholders down that then negotiate the terms to exit their stock exchange listing.I’m sure they look after themselves when deciding whether to provide their recommendation to accept the private capital offer.Private capital can be tough task masters of course and i hope that proves the case for Inmarsat's management.Perhaps the Cobham move will be scuppered by justifiable concern.Too late now to stop the loss of Inmarsat to private capital.Inmarsat,a company who had a nasty habit of falling out with its institutional investors because of its over generous remuneration packages. Will they convince private backers of their worthiness?

New shorter appears over the declaration threshold. Portsea at 0.64%. Can't help but think that their risk/reward ratio is somewhat skewed against them. Certainly shows that a lot of investors are buying into the results.

Chatter on FT Aplhaville about ISAT:

11:46 am
Inmarsat PLC (ISAT:LSE): Last: 395.80, up 7.4 (+1.91%), High: 396.20, Low: 389.60, Volume: 380.77k

BE - I'm guessing the request is on the back of the Jefferies note from a day or two ago that talks about Ligado optionality.

BE - Ligado being Lightsquared as was. Bonds have rallied rather sharply over the past fortnight, suggesting people in Washington might have an inkling that news is on the way regarding its interference problems.

11:48 am
BE - We're waiting for a letter from NTIA Director David Redl on whether the network's going to be nixed or not.

BE - And here's where Jefferies goes 7 dimensional chess ....

"We suspect an investor(s) has been advised by a retained lawyer that the Redl letter could be imminent, and in an act of regulatory pragmatism over principle, that letter will recommend the FCC accept the Ligado proposal. In this seemingly interminable endgame, we might finally reach a decisive conclusion. A pro-Ligado stance would be very positive for Inmarsat, but there is a bigger game afoot now."

11:50 am

"We feel more certain now of EchoStar's vision that the MSS spectrum bands are "strategic" to future integrated cellular / terrestrial IoT networks. We therefore think its interest in Inmarsat remains - and in the short period of time since it walked away, its negotiating leverage with the Inmarsat Board has improved dramatically: Inmarsat's shares have drifted down on the back of a fresh short thesis around Maritime consensus downgrades. In the event of a Redl letter, Inmarsat may want to keep taking the Ligado cash, but it may feel coerced into taking Ligado equity."

BE - For more on the angling between EchoStar/Dish and the rest of the networks to block each other, see every other session last year .

How much will it actually cost Musk (his investors) to achieve everything he's aiming for and given the example of Tesla, how long is it really going to take?

It was a dislocated market with all the yield players bailing. The growth investors were sceptical (for good reason) still Echostar can’t really believe they would have picked this up for a smidgeon over £5.

If I understand these positions correctly, AQR, etc. are set to lose a lot of money?

A bid at 10 pounds a share for Inmarsat is the level at which the European satellite company’s executives would “undoubtedly” recommend an offer to investors, Giles Thorne, an analyst at Jefferies, said in a December note that argued the merits of an EchoStar bid. That’s more than double Friday’s closing price of 473.90 pence a share.

Folks I don't comment much on shares, outside my paid blogs, but I hold this one recently, so am moved to comment. From a technical view the down trend is over. Ergo its now going to go up. This 'bid' simply underlines the bottom is reached as far a M&A valuation is concerned, which is after all a bottom fishing valuation. The company is now in play and all the positive things that go with it, bids, counterbids, management pressure to perform etc, will support the price.
It is highly likely the share price will now rise, perhaps over the long term. Trend reversal is is how value investors make their corn.
