I do sometimes wonder if some avatars were asked who their favorite President of all times was, if they would reply "Jimmy Carter".

#9796 nothing oppressive there that I saw. Maybe I missed something - what are you getting at? Nothing wrong with fighting porn just so long as she isn't banning it.

#9794 Thanks graham. So you would oppose Bachmann vigorously too. After all, if America is not a free country it is nothing, eh.

#9793 At the moment it is hard to see past Romney (as opposed to Huntsman who is also a Mormon) or Bachmann. I don't think either can beat Obama though so I am hoping Pawlenty or Huntsman will pull something out of the hat (although it is still a long shot for them).

Yes, Pawlenty's ability to get a rigorous financial programme through in a lefty state is highly impressive. He would tick all the boxes for me but for that one drawback.

But that drawback is a "deal killer." Unlike Pinkey, I do not regard teh imposition of tyrannical and oppressive measures as a mere trifle. If teh United States is not a free country then it is nothing.

Pinkey,

Teh GOP simply arent going to win it with some boring cardboard cut out of John McCain im afraid.

Is that what you want?

Indeed, but that doesn't mean she will beat Obama. I don't think Pawlenty will win the nomination, but I do think if he did he would have a better chance of beating Obama.

In the June 2011 results of a survey of registered Minnesota voters conducted from May 27-30

New Hampshire Straw PollIn the New Hampshire GOP 2012 Straw Poll, taken January 22, 2011, Bachmann placed fifth with 5% of the vote, tying Jim DeMint and following Mitt Romney (35%), Ron Paul (11%), fellow Minnesotan Tim Pawlenty (8%), and Sarah Palin (7%). The poll listed 20 individuals and an option for "other" (which received 2%). Among the notables she outpolled were Rick Santorum (3%), Newt Gingrich (3%), Mike Pence (3%), and Rudy Giuliani (2%).[7]

#9784 Polling this far in advance of the election is ridiculously unreliable. His biggest problem is a lack of recognition but if he won the Republican nomination, that would change very quickly. As I said, Minnesota is quite lefty - it never voted for Ronald Reagan ffs so how much would you trust them?

#9782 When considering if someone is qualified to be the most powerful person in the world, you have to take account of these things. MB has many sensible policy positions, she is certainly quite sound fiscally, although seems to be one of these Republicans who wants the deficit to be entirely eliminated with spending cuts, a position which, as the Economist (which I know you think is lefty but is actually fiscally conservative) points out this week, is economically illiterate.

Which is EXACTLY teh point I was making:

In the June 2011 results of a survey of registered Minnesota voters conducted from May 27-30, 42% of Minnesotans had a favorable opinion of Pawlenty, while 52% had an unfavorable opinion of him. In the 2012 presidential race polling, the results show President Obama leading Pawlenty by 51% to 43%, suggesting Pawlenty would lose his home state to President Obama were he the 2012 GOP nominee

Pawlenty has quite an impressive electoral record in what is essentially quite a lefty state. That suggets he might have a chance to me. Bringing in a smoking ban is hardly a deal-killer when politicians of all stripes tend to support them these days.

Minnesota is the only state in the nation that did not vote for Ronald Reagan in either of his presidential runs. Minnesota has gone to the Democratic Party in every Presidential Election since 1960, with the exception of 1972, when it was carried by Richard Nixon and the Republican Party.

Pinkey,

There are faith schools all over teh show. Most of it you believe to be claptrap, but leave them to it. I dont see why this should be different.

Unless of course there are other policies that you strongly disapprove too but havent yet highlighted, natch.
