Taken from today's report on proceedings in the Indo....
"Mr O'Brien agreed that as an owner of one of the biggest media companies in Ireland, Independent News and Media (INM), it was right that one can be free to express an opinion but, he said, only if they do not libel someone.

Counsel put it to him he would appreciate it was in the public interest that newspapers should get behind journalists who are prepared to say critical things about powerful people.

Mr O'Brien replied that while he was a shareholder in INM, he did not control it."

Denis O'Brien banks on smarter Haiti
Wednesday, 16th January 2013 12.28pm

When Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien set about building a cellphone company in the western hemisphere's poorest country, there was no shortage of sceptics.

Six years later O'Brien's company Digicel is the largest private investor in Haiti and has 4.8 million users, about half the population. It is a rare beacon of entrepreneurship in a country still struggling to rebuild after the 2010 earthquake.

O'Brien's ambitious plans for Digicel are part of his bullish vision for Haiti which stands in sharp contrast to the usually gloomy forecasts for a nation crippled by perpetual political turmoil and natural disasters.

Can you just see the reaction when a US investor
is asked to pay 1% stamp duty when buying Irish shares?

This bourse won't fare any better by being aligned to New York,
or even if Ireland does leave the euro and re-align with
the dollar. How does anyone expect it to survive
when it charges double the stamp duty on Irish registered shares
listed in London and Dublin?

O Briens 29.99% stake will ensure his entire investment is not wiped out - He would be too proud to admit he lost hundreds of millions on this particularly as his media empire needs more Irish presence in addition to which the SA interest has got to be worth the guts of 300m
