Received my cheque today. The wisest thing,to do,in my opinion is to clear debt.Consequently,I paid off a good chunk of my mortgage. These markets are trecherous, and it is all too easy to lose. What could be OK today, could be wrong tomorrow, such is the speed and volatility of the situation prevailing currently.Did not,IEC,cause us worry? It was not until virtually the last moment that we could breathe a sigh of relief, that the deal had gone through. Thanks to all the posters, who had monitored every twist and turn, were we able to see the final outcome. It is fortunate, that this was brought to a final conclusion. If not, these shares would have slumped to well over half their value. How many success stories are there like this?I would venture to say, from now on,increasingly few.It has simply become so much more difficult to pick successful shares.Furthermore, one has to have particularly strong courage in one's convictions.I am not saying for one moment, there are not opportunities out there. It is that the risk factor has increased considerably. Therefore tread carefully. Please do not lose this wonderful gain. Thanks, once again to those magnificent posters on this board for their insight and analysis. At some time a reality check has to be faced.Good luck to you all,and trust that the future brings you prosperity.

Gartmore predicts strong UK small caps rally
by Simon Danaher 14 January 2009
UK small caps have the potential to rally strongly as investors seek to rebalance their portfolios into recovery stocks, says Gartmore's Gervais Williams.

The Growth Opportunities manager says as we continue to see earnings downgrades many stocks will see recovery buyers and fewer sellers.

"The patient is alive. Many of the stocks we are looking at could double from here and still look undervalued in terms of their future earnings," says Gervais.

Sectors currently under-owned by investors are expected to be among those that recover the most, says Williams.

He cites his increased exposure to small-cap oil stocks as an example, which he raised after he saw valuations reaching overly depressed levels.

"Already, we have seen oil bouncing strongly off its December lows and it could have further to go," he says.

"We started a new position in Heritage Oil during December and we've added to our existing positions in Dragon Oil, Petroceltic International, Sterling Energy and Salamander Energy."

The RPL story confuses me. They have (end November) 19p per share in cash of which they plan to hand back 10p per share. They also have some power plants valued at (admittedly June 2008) 16p per share that they plan to sell. Plus a few other assets. From what I've been reading they appear to want to pretty much wind down the business and hand over the cash to the shareholders. Probably in the region of 30-40p potentially.

But it's an MM traded stock, so market makers set the price, currently 4-4 at 15-18p. With the 10p payment likely in February (general meeting to agree this is on Friday week) there's certainly the potential for a decent return, and fairly swiftly...

(Where's my bleedin' IEC money? TD Slaughterhouse does it again)

Got mine.

Might take a break for a while before deciding what to do. Although I might be tempted into Barclays if it continues to slide.

Good luck to everyone for the future.

Oil fans might like to take a look at one of my big holdings: oil-services firm Lamprell (LSE: LAM). Hit 150p last Wednesday then dropped for four days in a row to reach 105p at close today. A trading statement is due on 21 January which, if positive, should sent the shares skywards.

Just my opinion, so do your own research, etc.

re What oil company to invest in now

I recently promised myself the following

i) not to invest in Russia based oil stocks
ii) not to invest in heavily indebted oil companies eg Oilexco, Urals
iii) not to invest in small oilers who do not have the funds to finish exploring/appraising let alone developing to production a field or fields
iv) not to invest in oilers when the crude oil price is falling i.e. now, only when its bottomed (low $30's?)
v) to be prepared to sell an oiler whose share price has gone up because the crude oil price has shot up for no good reason eg because of the Gaza conflict (currently close to 100% in cash!)
vi) for now buy only producers with good cash positions VPC DNX TLW DGO etc but only when the oil price is lower
