Incidentally, re the UK problems, they have made provision, and have not spent much against it. What they said was they are not expecting to make further provision in the current year. "The GBP24.2m one-off charge of addressing the issues in the UK include our estimated cost of re-contacting and, if appropriate, compensating customers who may have suffered any detriment as a result of the way in which complaints have been handled or their policy purchased. In addition, there are redundancy and reorganisation costs, costs related to reviewing and improving our controls and governance and sales and marketing materials and the Ofcom fine. At the end of 2012, we had incurred GBP3.2m of actual expenditure, with the remaining GBP21.0m expected to be spent over the next 12 - 18 months." But that doesn't mean they won't have to...

I'm following this, but it is such a gamble. Who knows what the FSA will be like - usual pathetic 'customer can't be blamed, compensate them with a new house because they're too thick to be held responsible for their own actions' approach or something proportionate. In terms of ongoing business, a screaming buy. But... Be a bit wary with the EPS - there is one-time gain of £50m included, but also a (one-time?) cost of remedying the UK screw-up of £24m+ and the switch in France from 50% to 100% ownership ergo higher operating profit inclusion. But lowering UK tax rates, overseas growth, and presumably increasing (from 2011 levels) UK business will all help. Difficult to say what 'ongoing EPS' is, but it is in a pretty low multiple. And in this case, those earnings do indeed translate into cash generation.

Seems like the share price is being hit twice with the same newsflow. Even on the lesser adjusted EPS, the share price is now on a P/E of less than 7 times current earnings. Interesting at just how technically oversold the share price currently appears to be, Technical rebound imminent ?

Not invested but have to say that I am a little surprised by the negative reaction to the results. I guess having the FSA hanging over your head is not a good situation to be in....just ask CPP!

this thing will likely move higher on these results, maybe 20p or more however , some uncertainty remains; The costs of re-contacting customers and the extent of any compensation due has been based on our best estimates at this time using the results of internal and external reviews as well as the early results from initial pilots. It is possible that our assumptions regarding the number of customers, level of compensation payable, response rates and the upheld rate could be different to those currently assumed such that the amount currently recognised in this regard could be higher or lower. Furthermore, there is currently no certainty as to the nature or extent of the action, if any, that the FSA may seek to take following the conclusion of its investigation and accordingly any related financial effect, which could include a fine, cannot be estimated reliably. As a result, no provisions have been made in this regard in the current year.

http://www.bbb.org/us/article/bbb-encourages-caution-as-homeserve-usa-solicits-locally-34068 Looks like they're doing the same in the USA as what they've been taken to task for doing in the UK. When the US authorities clamp down it's game over. This thing has bust written all over it.

Homeserve fined £750,000 for making 'silent calls' Homeserve has been fined £750,000 for making excessive silent and abandoned calls to UK customers last year........In addition to the fine, Homeserve has also promised to compensate customers whose numbers match its records £10 each as 'a gesture of good will'. http://www.citywire.co.uk/money/homeserve-fined-750000-for-making-silent-calls/a583118?ref=citywire-money-latest-news-list

it took the fsa 12 months from the start of problems at cpp (after the first problem rns announcment anyway) before they initiated action, these things take forever. Timing the opening of a short position is the problem as always, these have the potential to be a highly profitable short sell

So which way will it go on today's trading statement. UK down worse than forecast, US doing well, but indications are they will get hit by the FSA in due course.

Must be in my own little bubble apart from the re-vamp of sales activity I have not heard any of this bad press. As far as service goes I was in the office of a friend of mine who covers call outs for Homeserve. He showed me the weekly update they get. Over the last 3 months they carried out 480 jobs with only 5 customers not completely happy.
