It seems as that the Guernsey Branch is not in administration and they are accepting HMV vouchers according to a news report. I will try to find a link and post it.

High Street will stay the same. Just the banks and shareholders will get stuffed on the way... If fox comes back to buy some bits I will be furious! And keep an eye out for the we7 stake, someone clever will have that away for peanuts...

"Irish grandad who took his grandson into store and took three games to the value of his E40 voucher which they had refused to honour."

good on him

ransacking hmv is no more than they have done to their shareholders, and customers

I am incensed that Gift Vouchers are not being honoured and have just emailed deloitte to say so - probably a waste of my time but it got it off my chest! I have never condoned law breaking but felt really sympathetic towards Irish grandad who took his grandson into store and took three games to the value of his E40 voucher which they had refused to honour.
I bought shares in this and have lost out quite heavily as a private investor who foolhardedly held on in hope that things would improve....... i got out at end of December with £3k but left a lot more behind. Painful and steep learning curve!!!!

The supermarkets already know car ownership will be much lower in the future. They are furiously opening convenience stores everywhere - Tesco Express, Sainsburys Local, Co-ops. "No one shall be more than a 15 minute walk from a convenience store."

Well, my distant friend who is a retail analyst was 100% correct, 3 well known high street chains will go bust soon after 1st January 2013 (Jessops, HMV, Blockbuster). I have posted such on this thread over the past few weeks, just not the names as I was unable to wrangle that privileged information out of him.

My reasoning - middle class gamblers and punters are increasingly choosing to scratch their itch online, from the privacy of their own couch, away from the sordid betting shop floor. But many poor people - and they remain core customer basis for the likes of Ladbrokes/ W Hill/P Power - still don't have internet access at home, and remain firmly entrenched in the culture of nipping down the bookies

brando69 - Disagree as my local high street in the UK is one of the richest and most well-off in the UK.

I think betting shops will continue to expand their high street presence, but only in poor towns/regions... not in the inner city high streets vacated by the likes of HMV

rrogans - the positive thing I found about being in sweden, I found the Swedes understood the traditional British sense of humour. Remember the most southerly part of Sweden is south of the Danish/German boarder.

Switzerland – 15 years ago I remember Berne airport, except for around where the terminal building and airport hotel were, there was no fencing around the airport, only signs ever 50yds or so warning of the airport and aircraft movements. I remember being advised if I pop over to the local town for a drink, on the way back if a little worse for ware the long piece of wide tarmac I'm crossing is not a road but the runway. I also loved Thun and its Christmas market.

Currently I live in St Petersburg, our bins are collected daily, almost as soon as the leaves fall from the trees are swept-up, at 22.30 looking out side my son's bedroom window some council worker is clearing the ice off the pavements, our local infrastructure is improving year on year (pavements all re-tarmac, all new play ground equipment etc.)

Stuart14 - While the women folk are shopping at Poundland or Primark the accompanying men folk pop in to the betting shop. I say men folk as it seems generally speaking these days they're no longer husbands. I also notice a good number of men as soon as they get paid their benefits also pop in to the betting shop, hoping for the big win.

Disagree about betting shops really. They are all focussing on their online business and really don't need a larger high street presence

Hi Loganair, agree with this but don't know where to go. Lived in Switzerland, but that was full of Swiss. Lived in Sweden, lovely but too cold for too long. Anyone got any good experiences of other countries?
