Trading in bitcoin was partially suspended on Friday after the value of the cryptocurrency plummeted.

Prices dropped 44 per cent from last weekend’s record highs. As they fell below $11,000 (£8,200) – down from almost $20,000 (£15,000) – some exchanges stopped traders buying and selling.

Tech entrepreneur and investor Oliver Isaacs said the fall was the result of a “herd mentality”.

He said: “Just as people feared missing out on the way up, the idea you can actually lose money is also a new emotion investors are experiencing and people, especially retail investors, are selling manically on the way down.”

Because bitcoin trading is unregulated, there are no rules to stop a mass sell-off. Only individual exchange websites can stop their users trading.

Analysts say they consider the fall to be temporary and expect the cryptocurrency to rally in the short-term, although many predicted further falls in the New Year.

Russia added another 29 tonnes in November, making 2017 already the country’s highest ever year for gold reserve increases with another month still to go.

Sanctions. What sanctions? Despite the imposition by the U.S. and some of its allies of economic sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Crimea, the Russian economy appears to be in a far better state than that of the USA. Unlike the latter Russia’s current account statistics remain stable to positive despite sanctions. The country’s economic management seems to be comfortably better than most Western economies.

Indeed with military successes in Syria and its domestic balance of payments performance, Russia seems to be running rings around the USA economically, diplomatically and militarily. It seems to be building a strong economic alliance with the world’s other superpower, China, which is now taking a significant tranche of Russia’s important oil and gas output with the construction of pipelines between the two nations.

Russia, like China tend to believe that gold will play an important role in any global economic realignment over the next few years. The U.S. is thus somewhat on the back foot in its reluctance to give any official credence to the place gold has in the world order.

At the moment the U.S. remains dominant in keeping the gold price under control – but for how long given the substantial gold flows from West to East?

I would add that the ruble is slightly higher on average this year to last so costs might be slightly higher.

average realised gold price last year was US$1,136 per oz. This year its been around 1250 so far

Lovely reversal.
On good point regarding the latest rns is if operating profits
rise so does our dividend, so any merger, acquisition or a
new line of organic gold production would be very interesting
indeed for our income, dyor.
