https://www.graphene-info.com/covid-19-and-graphene-current-overviewThe Coronavirus pandemic has been having a significant impact on the graphene market and industry. Even before the pandemic, graphene has already received much attention due to promising antimicrobial properties and demonstrated antiviral efficacy. However, there is no denying the recent urgency to put these traits to good use in combating the Coronavirus.?More than a few companies have launched graphene-enhanced textiles, inks and coatings, incorporated into personal protective gear (face masks, gloves etc.), and applications like air filters and room cleansers have been developed. This has been seen both in companies that have already started in this route before the pandemic, and from ones that have done a bit of "tuning" of their portfolio. There has been some repurposing of smart materials to design effective systems for combating COVID-19. Functionalized graphene demonstrates a good viral capture capacity that, combined with heat or light-mediated treatments, could be used as a disinfectant. So, a strong emphasis on environmental sensors and filters is clearly seen. In addition, graphene sensors can be implemented on standard textiles and drug efficacy screening, also contributing to various PPE applications. Coatings for protection of surfaces are being developed, as well as disinfectant solutions and detergents containing graphene and related materials to clean surfaces. Some examples of graphene-enhanced applications to battle the Coronavirus are:UK-based planarTECH and Thailand-based IDEATI have started marketing and distribution of its 2AM-branded graphene-enhanced antibacterial face masks.Haydale Graphene Industries announced that its partner IRPC has completed the development project with Haydale and started production of its new washable functionalized graphene-enhanced fabric mask.Versarien announced the launch of its first graphene-enhanced protective face mask, which utilizes Polygrene, Versarien's graphene-enhanced polymer.A firm called Flextrapower (formerly Bonbouton) was created to leverage research originally created in Stevens labs for biomedical applications. Flextrapower has been developing several graphene-based applications, including the most recent COVID-focused effort, a graphene mask.A consortium of Spanish scientists and companies, in which the University of Granada (UGR) is participating, has been developing new efficient prophylactic facemasks to combat the Coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. These masks will be made of non-woven textiles specially modified with graphene and derivative materials.A research team from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) announced the production of graphene masks with a reported anti-bacterial efficiency of 80%, which can be enhanced to almost 100% with exposure to sunlight for around 10 minutes.Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM have joined forces with partners in industry and healthcare to develop a graphene oxide based sensor platform to detect acute infections such as sepsis or the antibodies against the coronavirus within minutes.Caltech researchers have developed a new type of multiplexed test with a low-cost sensor that may enable the at-home diagnosis of a COVID infection through rapid analysis of small volumes of saliva or blood, without the involvement of a medical professional, in under 10 minutes.Grolltex has teamed up with Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute to develop a graphene-based virus testing platform to help combat COVID-19. The project involves using handheld reader units and disposable plastic testing chips designed for U.S. points of entry including hospitals and "point of care" locations.G6 Materials (formerly Graphene 3D Lab) is optimizing the business model to accommodate the new reality of Covid-19. As part of this, G6 has developed a graphene-based air purification tech that could help fight the virus.University of Illinois researchers have used graphene to develop a rapid, ultrasensitive test using a paper-based electrochemical sensor that can detect the presence of the virus in less than five minutes.Tags: Graphene applicationsGraphene SensorsMedicineGraphene 3D LabGraphene LabsHaydaleVersarienGraphene productionGraphene-InfoStanfordPermalink Posted: Dec 15, 2020 by Ron Mertens

"These new test results provide fantastic news, indicating that our graphene-enhanced face masks can be used for at least 4-5 months – assuming washing every 2-3 days – while still meeting the stated standards and without any reduction in performance.""We don't think any other graphene mask on the market can make this claim."

The 'G+ (Graphene plus)' branded mask has passed the test and certification of Korean and internationally recognised organisations. We ensure the stability of production capacity and quality, and are confident that Europeans will be satisfied. So far I see Directa plus with the G+ mark on face masks.

dcta shot up on the battery news on the 23rd nov rather than on their mask offering.
Graphene's disrupting more than just covid.

"Directa is pleased to announce that, further to a collaboration agreement announced in October this year, NexTech Batteries ("NexTech"), a leading producer and supplier of Lithium-Sulphur batteries using the Company's G+® pristine graphene nanoplatelets, has achieved above 400 Wh/kg (watt-hours per kilogram, the usual measure of energy density) in a practical system. NexTech produced several full-scale pouch format cell prototypes using its proprietary cathode and electrolyte materials producing 410Wh/kg of specific energy at a weight only slightly below 30g. For comparison, standard Lithium-Ion batteries have an energy density of 100-265 Wh/kg."

"Transportation electrification and renewable energy storage are some of the key targets for NexTech's vision, and making lightweight, safe and affordable batteries available to the world is part of our exciting future. Demonstrating above 400 Wh/kg in a practical system has been touted the holy grail for many of these applications to become a commercial reality and clearly achieving this milestone today positions NexTech in the driver seat to the EV race."

Benjamin Cook, CEO at Zirconia, said: "It is good to have partnerships whose technical knowledge and experience will allow us to pursue a path of continuous improvement for our nanoparticle-based ceramic surface treatments. As our green tech solution is the only technology that bonds chemically to concrete, solving key problems with subgrade water infrastructure, this partnership means improved water infrastructure in the UK and globally. We are working with Haydale to make water infrastructure more sustainable, all at the nano-scale where innovation resides."Keith Broadbent, Haydale CEO, said: "This innovative product is applied as a liquid and allows in-situ restoration of concrete, thereby avoiding expensive tear-out and replacement. It is anticipated that this technology will assist the UK water market, by rejuvenating old concrete structures that could otherwise not be repaired. We are currently working with a UK water utilities company where the benefits are already noted. This technology has the potential to be a very important technology for the UK water industry to achieve the AMP-7 objectives over the next five years."

IRPC has now placed a follow-on order for 200Kg of Haydale's bespoke ink, with further orders anticipated. The face masks are currently being produced for use internally within the IRPC group, with a forecasted external order book for 2021.The design specification is planned to be reviewed in 2021 when the masks will undergo assessment for additional fabric properties such as Virus Filtration Efficiency (VFE), UV Protection and EMC protection.Dr. Chuchawin Changtong, R&D Division Manager at IRPC, said: "We were very excited when launching graphene coated fabric masks. We also see a great potential of graphene coated fabric in number of applications including medical application. Speed is the key to capture market opportunity, collaboration with Haydale has demonstrated the case."

Facemask going to be huge as second strain of virus being around for longer. Normal face masks need a upgrade for protecting us all. With around 19 washes what more do you want. Better than buying a pack and disposing.
