I'm doing my best to ignore fundamentals and to just trade the chart pattern. Hope not to be here too long!

Very difficult to figure this one out. Cash position is better than many feared -may allay concerns over dividend cut?

I think you need a global perspective here.
No commodity price goes down for ever. The pain becomes so acute for the producers that they start closing capacity and eventually supply/demand comes more into balance. Where there is a better balance between supply and demand eg anthracite prices have held up fairly well. Three months ago the iron ore prognosis was dire -I read this morning that prices have 'surged' to a 10 week high.
You may to be too gloomy on China -this morning there is news of stimulus measures. This should help underpin met coal prices.
There has been a lot of consolidation news in the USA as the weaker companies have exited/sold out. The new owners will not run the mines at a loss.
From a UK perspective it does look exceedingly gloomy and I would be very critical of the various measures which have led to the closure of coal fired capacity in the UK.
My main concern is the tide of legislation which will gradually phase out thermal coal as a power source.

"if coal prices pick up"?

And what do you think will trigger this?

Drax currently running its 3 units at a loss, Ferrybridge and Eggborough both shutting so buying no more coal. Cottam running at a loss. Gas and oil at multi-year lows. American coal dirt cheap and flooding the market. China commodities slowing.

Where do you see this tick up coming from?

Hmm-you mean RWE? Doubt it myself -but one can always hope. It's probably not badly managed but in the wrong industry. They should do more to leverage what they have especially the landbank. Still if coal prices pick up the numbers should improve.

Drax or Centrica or Deutsche power or a hedge fund would buy it

Probably more that coal fired power is not dead. Who would want to buy this -I can't think of any names. Can anyone? Some think the commodity cycle has bottomed so even coal prices may be due a rise.

For the very little that it is worth I decided to exit today as a precautionary measure. Managed, surprisingly, a fair turn on the investment and slightly concerned on the forward prospects. Virtually a certainty that this is now going to go from strength to strength ;-)
