04/11/2011 23:08 | Piedro, you've never offended by posting, so please continue to express your views. Gbb483, I haven't overlooked the 30% drop. I thought £7 was way too high and sold. By the same token, £5 was way too cheap so I bought. I'm just surprised at how quickly perception can change despite most of the fundamental information being well known. For what it's worth, I think HMY is a great business and my biggest holding by far but every stock has a fair value and to me, without fresh evidence of higher growth, we are getting close to over-valuation again. Interims will reveal whether or not that is the case. | alter ego
04/11/2011 15:52 | There was HMY news before the rise .... but as it seems that I have caused offence by posting too often ..... .... I have been keeping quiet. DYOR. | piedro
04/11/2011 15:15 | You're forgetting the 30% drop back in August - and they still have a bit of work to do before they get back to where they were. | gbb483
04/11/2011 15:01 | +20% in about 7 days - much of it before the Shares mag item too. Just shows how lowly rated they were IMO. | alter ego

09/10/2011 23:17 | Of course I understand inflation. I happen to believe that companies with cash are safer than those borrowed up to the eyeballs though. | alter ego
09/10/2011 17:31 | In times of inflation - borrow as much as you can for as long as you can!! That's what the Government does - look at the depreciation in the worth of war loan to quote one and speaking of quoting, the UK Debt Management Office: 'There are currently eight undated gilts in issue. These are the oldest remaining gilts in issue, some dating back to the nineteenth century. The redemption of these bonds is at the discretion of the Government, but because of their age, they all have low coupons and so there is little current incentive for the Government to redeem them.' Alter Ego: If you don't understand the effects of inflation I suggest you learn fast. | peter27
09/10/2011 17:05 | Of course - that's how I bought my houses. I now don't need a mortgage - but I shall be looking for a cheap repossession and will borrow to fund it. | gbb483
07/10/2011 22:49 | Hmmm, hope you don't employ that approach to your personal finances. | alter ego
07/10/2011 22:47 | ... and for the next few years cash will be worthless due to infl_ation - you need to spend all you've got and borrow as much as they'll give you (you'll only have to pay back a fraction in real terms of what you borrow). | gbb483
07/10/2011 14:11 | Not clear what point you're making about 2008 - lot of water under the bridge since then including mayhem on financial markets and recession. What matters is where we are heading and my take is that HMY have picked up a quality business that fits neatly with its existing product range and markets at a sensible price. That looks a good use of part of the cash pile and still leaves about £60m worth about £1.30 a share. It's an enviable position to be in. | alter ego
