Any thoughts on ML buying in and then adding - are they acting on behalf of someone?

Also, I wonder what persuaded the German to buy in - no obvious link that i can see?

Gym Group is ‘shaping up’, says Peel Hunt

Peel Hunt anticipates further upside for Gym Group (GYM), as the business enters a new growth stage.

Analyst Douglas Jack retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of 250p on the stock. The shares 3.5p to close 2% higher on Monday at 175.5p after the company reported its first profit in five years.

‘We estimate that the low-cost gym market could expand from 510 sites to 1,140 over the next nine years, without requiring gym market penetration to exceed 15%,’ he said.

‘This target may prove too cautious as, encouragingly, gym market penetration grew from 13.5% to 14.2% in the last year alone. We expect The Gym Group to fully exploit this substantial growth opportunity.’

In the analyst’s opinion three factors could underpin future growth: ‘scope to raise prices; faster expansion; and margin growth as the estate matures’, with the latter providing up to 25% upside to 2019 forecasts.

Given there is potential for strong self-financed growth, coupled with an 8% equity free cash flow yield, Jack said Gym Group's shares look attractively priced.

Berenberg may have helped private equity firm Phoenix Equity Partnersoffload its remaining stake in Gym Group on Friday, but the boutiquebank was behind today's share price recovery after a bullish note onhte low cos gyms operator. Analysts said they left a meeting withmanagement on Friday more optimistic about the business, adding thatthere are plenty of ways it could beat analyst expectations this year."All considered our blue sky scenario suggests that 2019 earningscould be more than 15% higher than our current estimate" said analystOwen Shirley.

The private equity backers of budget-friendly The Gym Group (GYM) finally sold their remaining shares in the business. Phoenix and Bridges Capital offloaded their remaining stock at 175p per share, which was sold to institutional investors and represented 30.5% of Gym's issued share capital.

Does this mean they have given up any hope of a takeover?

at long last, the overhang is out the way. that is pretty good placing 30% of the company at a 5% discount.

worth picking these up on the down days. rallied from 1.65 to 2.00 on the last trading statement, judging by the number of new gyms opening this year growth should not be a problem in 2017. results mid march.

as per the seeking alpha article, just too cheap, director buying before christmas and heavy volumes clearing out the overhang. it hit 230p on the last results, before a big placing at 210p. huge opportunities in this market.

Some interesting research on Gym:
hxxp://seekingalpha.co.uk/2017/01/06/gym-group-gym-ln-cheap-and-cheerful/

Clearly market underestimates the growth potential of low-cost gyms.
This article shows that Google Searches on low-cost gyms accelerate whereas interest on traditional gyms fades away

i presume this has been sold off in anticipation of the Pure float. that has now been canned. I guess the upside is going to be capped until the Gym overhang is out the way, and ultimately Pure gets done. but it hit £2.80 with all this in the background before. I still think this a cheap solid growth prospect.

Oregano, I actually think you are right. I'm holding with GYM too, good buying opportunity right now and a better investment in my eyes. sh1984, i'm curious about the IPO offer price too

VCs are always going to sell down their stake. they have another 30% to go. I have bought more as GYM is performing exceptionally well operationally and it is a better investment than Pure. Investors aren't going to sell GYM to buy Pure. this is a great opp.

Not good at all, perhaps the impending flotation of Pure Gym has got something to do with it, will make life more difficult now for GYM group, Pure Gym will have cash to invest from the flotation, interested to see what their IPO offer price will be.......

Thoughts on the current sell off of 15 million shares by a major shareholder? Sounds like flea tactics to me! Not good!
