19/11/2007 15:45 | Rivaldo, good point on the delayed payment. One in the hand worth two in the bush etc. especially in a falling market. I feel Olympus have got a fairly good price because of the negative attitude to companies who earn a significant proportion of their profits in US dollars. As far as I can see since 80% of GYG's expenditure is in dollars it is more the headline figure in pounds which decreases (with no divi to pay in pounds) than GYG's ability to expand in it's lead market of the US. On that basis I would compare 630 more with the 470-480 level (before dollar worries seriously came into play) than with the direct pre-bid level of 400. Anyway, having said all that, not unhappy with 610 or so. Good luck to all. | jebenn1
19/11/2007 13:59 | Well done all holders - your patience and faith in Gyrus has been rewarded! Since wednesday! :-) I must say I owe shadowtrader a vote of thanks. He's been consistantly +ve on this sector for a while. With the market well off highs I looked for something in this area and came up with GYG. Sold this a.m.. missed the top but took 629p. For the odd penny and brokerage, didn't seem any point waiting. Mixed feelings though, another chunk of U.K. asset base gone..er..east. Best of luck for those who stay with it. | pilgrim
19/11/2007 13:41 | Hi Guys, Mixed feelings myself, couple of points: >> This was going to happen at some stage but there is a lot of value yet to be seen from this business; >> The bid has come from a very unexpected source; >> The slide rules will be out over the pond. This really heightens the profile of Gyrus and there are several others players out there that will be able to see Gyrus fitting very easily as a division into their business. This may not be the end of the matter...... Well done all holders - your patience and faith in Gyrus has been rewarded! Regards, Maddox | maddox
19/11/2007 12:09 | The discount is simply due to the time lag to completion of the offer in early 2008, i.e there's time value in selling now and earning interest on or reinvesting the cash rather than holding on for the full 630p. And a small element of risk of non-completion in that timeframe. The AFX news notes that GYG sounded out major holders - I'm not sure those holders were 100% supportive given the lack of irrevocables. Let's see if any other offers come out the woodwork. | rivaldo
19/11/2007 11:58 | 630p is the offer price. So with the price in the 6.12 to 6.18 kind of area what is the market trying to say? Presumabaly that there is a chance that the deal won't go through even though the board has agreed? Or am I missing another risk? I am assuming Olympus is solvent! | jebenn1
19/11/2007 10:18 | Pilgrim, yes this is the same Olympus camera company. A lovely all cash offer! Well done on selling wad collector. This is a friendly offer, and the cash is great, so it will have to be a stunning counter-bid to succeed. I'll hold for a few days and if I miss out on 5-6p per share then so be it. I think there are many large outfits worldwide who are interested in GYG and who are capable of bidding high, so the risk/reward makes it worth holding on for me for a little while I think. It's interesting that there is no institutional support declared yet for Olympus, only the directors' 0.4% - though the £9.7m break fee is surely a bit over the top?!! | rivaldo
19/11/2007 09:15 | Doubt it , looks too certain.I guess a 1.5p premium at the price right now suggests someone has a hope , but not me.I'm selling now to take that extra 1.5p , but more to put the money elsewhere early ,as the market looks full of bargains. | wad collector
19/11/2007 09:09 | Any chance of a higher offer? | turbomouth
19/11/2007 09:08 | No doubt the brilliant shorters had already closed their positions | grigor
19/11/2007 09:00 | Yup. Nice start to a monday morning :-) | wjccghcc
19/11/2007 08:51 | Maddox , guess we are going to have to find another boring share to put our money into! That was an impressively slick deal - no hint of the price rising last week.Must have had good security. I was wondering whether this pirce included the dividend, and then I remembered - there never has been one! | wad collector
19/11/2007 08:37 | WOW!, Only bought in on wednesday. Santas' early. Is this Olympus the camera people? | pilgrim
19/11/2007 08:29 | I am not surprised that GYG is to be bought out but I am surprised by the identity of the buyer. I was sure that this would go to the Yanks - the cavalry might still appear over the horizon or am I perhaps being too greedy? | gre
19/11/2007 08:00 | Oh yes! 630p will do for me Tommy. All tax-free in the family ISAs and PEPs too. A good start to the week. | rivaldo
16/11/2007 12:58 | Recovered as you wrote. I guess the optimistic viewpoint is that we are still up on a year ago. | wad collector
16/11/2007 10:09 | Hi Wad, Yep, very boring! This is just a cost of doing business in the US - every company I have invested in has been sued in the US for patent infringement. I don't know why the share price reacts this way, the effects in the worse case are typically very marginal. What it does signal is that Gyrus has got its competitors worried. 16/11/2007 09:25 | United States Patent 6,582,427 Goble , et al. June 24, 2003 Electrosurgery system Abstract An electrosurgery system includes an electrosurgical generator (10) coupled to or part of an electrosurgical instrument, the generator being operable to generate electrosurgical power in low frequency (typically at 1 MHz) and high frequency bands (typically at 2.45 GHz) either simultaneously or individually the generator includes a load-responsive control circuit which, in one mode, causes power to be generated predominantly at 1 MHz when the load impedance is high and predominantly at 2.45 MHz when it is low. This allows automatic switching between cutting and coagulation operation. In one embodiment, the instrument includes a gas plasma generator operating such that an ionizable gas is energized in a gas supply passage by the 2.45 GHz component to form a plasma stream which acts as a conductor for delivering the 1 MHz component to a tissue treatment outlet of the passage. (FIG. 4). Inventors: Goble; Colin C. O. (Penarth, GB), Amoah; Francis E (Cardiff, GB), Goble; Nigel M (Cardiff, GB) Assignee: Gyrus Medical Limited (Wales, GB) Appl. No.: 09/517,631 Filed: March 3, 2000 -------------------- United States Patent 5,697,882 Eggers , et al. December 16, 1997 System and method for electrosurgical cutting and ablation Abstract An electrosurgical probe (10) comprises a shaft (13) having an electrode array (58) at its distal end and a connector (19) at its proximal end for coupling the electrode array to a high frequency power supply (28). The shaft includes a return electrode (56) recessed from its distal end and enclosed within an insulating jacket (18). The return electrode defines an inner passage (83) electrically connected to both the return electrode and the electrode array for passage of an electrically conducting liquid (50). By applying high frequency voltage to the electrode array and the return electrode, the electrically conducting liquid generates a current flow path between the return electrode and the electrode array so that target tissue may be cut or ablated. The probe is particularly useful in dry environments, such as the mouth or abdominal cavity, because the electrically conducting liquid provides the necessary return current path between the active and return electrodes. Inventors: Eggers; Philip E. (Dublin, OH), Thapliyal; Hira V. (Los Altos, CA) Assignee: Arthrocare Corporation (Sunnyvale, CA) Appl. No.: 08/561,958 Filed: November 22, 1995 | substp
16/11/2007 08:39 | Is this the beginning of another expensive legal battle? | wad collector
02/11/2007 09:37 | GYG was a main Buy tip in the IC today. I'll try to see what it says later. GYG has performed pretty well recently, on decent volumes - maybe corporate activity will start again? | rivaldo
31/10/2007 11:05 | It looks a long way back up to a fiver from here.Time to hold and forget about it for a while I think. | wad collector
16/10/2007 20:35 | If he was really good, he would reverse his position :-) | grigor
15/10/2007 11:18 | :o)) Robbie closed his position on Friday - onwards and upwards again then. | rivaldo
