07/10/2023 10:40 | OT but shows Iraq need to get gas to Europe through Turkey Turkey’s energy minister to visit Israel as talks advance on gas transfers to Europe The Turkish energy minister says his country’s priority is to bring Israeli gas to Turkey. Media film and photograph the Abdulhamid Han drill ship, the fourth built by Turkey, in Mersin on August 9, 2022 before it leaves for gas exploration to an undisputed area in the Mediterranean Sea, in south of the city of Gazipasa. - Turkey on August 9, 2022 sent its newest drill ship on the first eastern Mediterranean energy exploration mission in nearly two years. The search for natural gas in energy-rich waters around the divided island of Cyprus has turned into an irritant in Turkey's ties with the Euro ADEM ALTAN/AFP via Getty Images Rina Bassist @RinaBassist Ezgi Akin @ezgi_akin October 5, 2023 ANKARA — Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Thursday that he was planning to visit Israel for talks to bring Israeli gas to Turkey. “We intend to discuss this issue face to face with both our counterpart Israeli Energy Minister and with companies that operate in this field,” Bayraktar told Turkey’s NTV television. A senior source in the Israel Energy Ministry confirmed to Al-Monitor that the visit is set to take place, but said the date hasn’t been finalized yet. Bayraktar added that Ankara sees it as a priority to bring Israeli gas to Turkey. “Carrying the gas to Europe via Turkey is solely a part of the scope. Essential is Israeli gas coming to Turkey,” Bayraktar said, adding that Turkey wasn’t positioning itself as just a transit country. Additionally, he highlighted their prior discussions on energy cooperation, citing conversations held with Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz during a phone call in early September. The conversations continued during a meeting between the Turkish and Israeli delegations on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly summit on Sept. 19. Turkey has had long-standing aspirations to carry Israeli gas to Europe via a partly offshore pipeline in the Mediterranean Sea. Speaking following his appointment to the post in June, Bayraktar cited Turkey's intention to carry Israeli natural gas to Europe as one of Ankara's priorities, saying a pipeline of nearly 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) would do the job. Cyprus remains the main obstacle for any such plans to materialize, particularly due to its significant role as a passage point for the proposed pipeline. The island has been ethnically divided between Turkish and Greek Cypriots since 1974. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Ankara, while the Greek-controlled Republic of Cyprus is an internationally recognized EU member state. A potential offshore pipeline requires settlement of contested territorial claims between Turkey, Turkish and Greek Cypriots. Israel is also seeking to facilitate its gas exports to Europe at a time when European capitals are scrambling to reduce their dependence on Russian gas. Israel, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt had previously drafted a project to carry Egyptian and Israeli gas to Europe via an offshore pipeline bypassing Turkey. The so-called EastMed project, however, was later shelved after Washington withdrew its support, citing cost-related reasons. That being said, as far as Israel is concerned, this possibility seems to be back on the table now. Departing last month for a one-day visit in Cyprus, Netanyahu said he will discuss two possibilities for exporting Israeli gas to Europe: the East Med pipeline or a liquifying plant in Cyprus with gas possibly transferred via ships and not an undersea pipeline. Bayraktar's anticipated visit to Israel coincides with a thaw in Turkish-Israeli relations, which have been steadily improving since the two nations ended a decade-freeze fully restored diplomatic ties last year. Last month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met officially for the first time during the sidelines of the UNGA summit in New York, and the Israeli premier is expected to visit Ankara.
