01/3/2021 09:02 | TA - LOL, that conjures up an image. I'm afraid even Boris at his most charismatic couldn't charm that sourpuss. I stayed at Kinlochewe in April 2019 and went up a snow capped Slioch as well as the Torridon peeks. It is extremely scenic in that area. My friend is more weather sensitive than me, she has two small chihuahuas (often seen in a pink buggy), so I have assured her there is a micro climate on the west coast that supports the tropical gardens at Inverewe. I'm just hoping the Scottish weather doesn't let me down. The gardens were featured on 'The Grand Tours of Scotland' and hopefully they'll let the infamous pink chariot in. The cycling section of the Scottish Ironman event starts from Sheidaig going up through Torridon, Gairloch and Poolewe which I'm sure you would have smashed in your younger days. | arphillips
01/3/2021 07:50 | Greatland has jumped. SVE to follow in a few minutes? | rose_by_another_name
01/3/2021 07:48 | A lot of self-congratulation and self- justification amongst the barbs when I got back after the weekend. I particularly found the speculations about posts various people claim not to be able to read, but somehow sense must be hostile to them, very revealing of character. It's not a question of "peace" breaking out, but how much "cynical" (I have other words for it) behaviour one can put up with without comment. | rose_by_another_name
01/3/2021 00:12 | Zinc falling again so maybe GFM will rise. You never know. | up just a little bit
28/2/2021 22:30 | Alan, it seems they were out in force everywhere. You go into shops and its not the odd one or two that aren't wearing masks. I was in a supermarket last week and not that busy but there were ten that I counted. Talking to a member of staff he said they've been told to challenge people but as he said they are not the police. I know some people have medical issues with masks but so many in one place at the same time makes you wonder. Zoo | zooman
28/2/2021 22:01 | Yes indeed ARP. After catching covid last April the bike got me back to some semblance of fitness and we have some quite nice country roads around here without too much traffic. Good for you making those holiday plans. Poolewe is a lovely part of the world. I particularly like Loch Maree although it's a while since I visited. The view of Slioch across the Loch is stunning although I expect you've already climbed it. If you're interested in gardens you should go to Inverewe gardens. One of the most impressive things about them is that they were started by Osgood Mckenzie when he was only 20. At that age most of us were chasing girls until one of them caught us. But Osgood was busy creating a world famous garden! I'm sure that Nicola will allow you to travel, always providing she's still in charge. My golf playing neighbour tells me that his club have now officially named a particular type of putt after "Nicola" - a nasty little five footer! | theapiarist
28/2/2021 21:21 | hi there everybody what a day we’ve had police out in bulk helicopters flying over the beach , I’ve never seen so many people what it will do to the numbers I dread to think,I went inland but it was still bad, nice to hear about holidays , enjoy as much of it while you can , I’m finished with all that now but I do have many memories l cut up hundreds of photos now there is only me left, wonder what tomorrow will be on the markets , it’s very hard to read the stock market nowadays , glad you are all ok, | alangriffbang
28/2/2021 18:54 | TA - Despite not being in your pomp I'm suspect you appreciate just getting those wheels spinning all the more these days. Politics is a dirty business particularly your side of the border at the moment, two heavyweights like Ali/Fraser squaring up, the silver lining is that the big push for independence is losing momentum. Whatever transpires I'm optimistic that travel restrictions will be lifted by mid May as I have cottages booked in Aberfeldy and then Poolewe the following week. The first week I will be targeting a number of munros starting from near Blair Atholl including Beinn a' Ghlo and in the second week hopefully bag An Teallach as well as enjoying the beaches on the west coast. Cottage availability is very limited this year so in the summer months I'll probably have to get the tent out but I do have a further two weeks booked for early September. | arphillips
28/2/2021 13:01 | JPPP, personally I feel there has to be a happy medium with interest rates. Currently they are too low but conversely they mustn't go to high. From a government prospective if people spend get then into debt, stop buying their own property ultimately the government will end up supporting people even more, not good.Cryptocurrency is way to unstable and many stay away from that and stocks & shares. Granted the government need people to spend in order to kick start the economy but it has to be in a balanced and manage way or we will end up in an even worse situation. Investing in the market going forward is going to require careful planning. IMHOZoo | zooman
28/2/2021 12:20 | Apiarist, swapping Brooks for gel was disconcerting, but wow I love it now! Going back to posts on taper tantrum and higher rates, I'd been thinking rates couldn't stay that low. As I said a while ago, 18 bps for 5 year money is nuts. Rates had to go up at some stage. And we all agree there is little value in the market generally. Also tech and biotech always do well in low interest rates for a number of reasons, one of course is the PV of cashflows and terminal value is higher. So we can expect them to suffer most. My feeling is this is blowing the froth off the top, rather than a major fall, the market was too hot. I'm reminded of Lawson's teenage scribblers (I think it was him), their new story is rising rates. oh gosh chancellor, if rates go up, what will it cost? Wow a new story to overblow... where do we think rates are going to? My guess is not very high. So change the PV's a bit. The QE has been so big, the bubble can't be popped, I don't think. Were would the money go? OK some to crypto and other funny assets, but basically equities, bonds don't sound so good. And if rates go up, it is because the economy is healthier. A good thing no? And we will have a lot of pent up spending spent. So personally I think it is a chance to buy selectively at better prices - what exactly is difficult as ever. I like Sage's idea about general commodities. Maybe more GFM. I hope the share buy backs (a bit like Berkshire hathaway hopefully...) will be at a discount to what they think the company is worth, so will be in our best interests. That is how it ought to work anyway!! GLA JPPP | jppp
28/2/2021 11:15 | ARP. I'm afraid the "trusty old bike", like it's owner, is unrecognisable from it's heyday! First casualty was the drop "randonneur" handlebar replaced with a straight bar following a neck injury. Next to go was the gearing to allow the "old codger" to get up hills that once he wouldn't have noticed. Finally, and perhaps most ignominiously, the demise of the old faithful leather Brooks saddle to be replaced by a poncey Italian gel seat! On a more cheerful note Nicola might allow you to resume your Munro bagging by the summer. Always assuming Alex has done for her first! | theapiarist
28/2/2021 08:34 | morning zoo I will keep my eye on it ,I’m hoping GGP might eke out another rise along with gun, don’t know about GFM it always does the unexpected ,what a beautiful day today I will be meeting my friends inland in a park it’s far to dangerous on the seafront ,you have a good day and enjoy the fresh air, good luck | alangriffbang
27/2/2021 23:03 | Alan, keep an eye on Sunrise Monday or Tuesday because PC is doing a proactive interview on Tuesday and the Webinar on Wednesday, seems a bit odd because they've not done it like that before. Maybe something or nothing but the price has been hammered lately.Zoo | zooman
27/2/2021 21:50 | TA - I'm impressed. That 'trusty old bike' has served you well, sounds like it receives lots of loving tender care. You are obviously still incredibly active as I recall you mentioned going running a little while ago. | arphillips
27/2/2021 19:49 | ARP. LOL! Just my trusty old bike that I put together 35 years ago using a Nigel Dean frame. Reynolds 753 tubing. Those were the days when British frames were the best and no electric motors! | theapiarist
27/2/2021 19:32 | The fact is that crowds flocked to the Southern beaches last summer and there was no appreciable transmission of the virus Which is more important - exposure to UV or absolute temperature? | phillis
27/2/2021 18:39 | ARP I still think GGP and gun are very good buys at this level, let’s hope for better next week, | alangriffbang
27/2/2021 18:15 | A - It was a similar situation on the seafront here today, just a sea of people. I gave it a miss this afternoon. Yes, the results are continuing to disappoint. To be fair Brighton were very unlucky, hit the woodwork twice from penalties and a goal disallowed. Saints are slipping ever closer to the drop zone, Brighton could overtake them yet. I sold some more of gold miners on Friday as POG dropped sharply again, it was a very poor week for me overall. However, with the price of zinc remaining strong, I'm hopeful Griffin will move to new highs in time. Enjoy the sunshine and stay safe. | arphillips
27/2/2021 17:50 | hi ARP another rubbish result from Pompey have just looked at the score they can’t win at home and I see West Brom beat Brighton so not a good day, hope you are doing well, | alangriffbang
27/2/2021 17:47 | Zoo, just got back now and it was like a bank holiday tomorrow will be just as bad interesting to see if the figures go up and who they blame, hope you had a good day, | alangriffbang
27/2/2021 17:08 | TA - That's sounds like a very impressive cycle ride you did yesterday but you forgot to mention it was on an electric bike. | arphillips
27/2/2021 16:11 | Alan, this is going to be the problem. I took the bike out and there's large groups everywhere no masks etc. I was reading during the week that the government will not do another lockdown as the economy can't take much more. Also looking like the budget will be a hard one and is going to have to be carefully managed.I'm sure there will be lots of debate on here regarding it. Zoo | zooman
27/2/2021 14:44 | Agree with you there Alan it's so busy out for all intense purposes lock down appears to be over. | up just a little bit
27/2/2021 14:28 | Wow, thanks Mr Bee. I had no idea. Nice to learn something new. I have been outside enjoying the sunshine. What a cracking day. | sageman
27/2/2021 13:08 | Sage. They don't actually hibernate. About 10,000 bees go in to the winter period and form a cluster for warmth. To maintain their body temperature, they vibrate their wing muscles to generate heat. The cluster will expand and contract depending on the external conditions in order to maintain a constant temperature. In order to keep this up throughout the winter and early spring they eat honey. If the beekeeper has done his job properly there will be a store of 40 Lbs forming a canopy over the cluster which they steadily munch their way through. | theapiarist |
