Investors Chronicle:

It was a good Christmas for pub group Greene King (GNK), which reported a 3.2 per cent improvement in like-for-like sales over the 36 weeks ended 6 January 2019 - representing growth ahead of the market. Like-for-like sales during the last two weeks, including Christmas and the New Year, were up 10.9 per cent, with record Christmas day sales of £7.7m.

The group’s cost cutting programme also continues, with the intention to relieve some of the expected £10m-£20m input cost inflation this year. We remain buyers.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said: "It’s about time that Greene King served up a decent trading update, having disappointed on several occasions over the past year or two.

"Sales growth has accelerated in its managed pubs division over the past six weeks, helped by a good Christmas period. However, it is worth noting that the pub company had easy year-on-year comparative figures to beat. A year ago trading was hit by snow so mild weather this time round will have worked in Greene King’s favour.

"Chief executive Rooney Anand is now into his final run before stepping down in April. His successor will inherit a business which is ripe for shaking up, through such actions as selling assets, streamlining some of the brands and tidying up the estate to focus on the more profitable sites.

"As it stands, analysts don’t expect the business to grow pre-tax profit until the year ending April 2021.

"Despite positive factors in the latest trading update, Greene King looks like it is stuck in the mud in a sector that is at the mercy of fragile consumer spending. It will be hoping that Brexit doesn’t cause any major economic setbacks in the UK and that consumers don’t tighten their purse strings on discretionary spending."

Market report:

Greene King advanced 4.5% after a strong trading performance over the festive period.

For the 36 weeks to January 6, the FTSE 250 constituent reported like-for-like sales up 3.2%. Just in the two weeks covering Christmas and the New Year, Greene King said like-for-like sales climbed 11%, tills ringing to the tune of GBP7.7 million on Christmas day alone.

Nicholas Hyett, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, commented: "It's worth noting that cost inflation means profit growth may not keep pace with sales this year, despite Rooney Anand's corporate self-help measures, and the group's tenanted estate has seen profit shrink year to date. Nonetheless these are certainly healthy numbers from the pub group, and will leave investors breathing a sigh of relief."

Trading statement for the 36 weeks to 6th January 2019

After 36 weeks of our financial year, Pub Company like-for-like (LFL) sales were up 3.2% following strong trading over the Christmas period as we continue to trade ahead of the market1. LFL sales in the last two weeks, covering Christmas and the New Year, were up 10.9% and we achieved record Christmas day sales of £7.7m. All sales categories saw LFL sales growth over the last six weeks with our Greene King branded Local Pubs driving strong drink sales growth. Last year's additional investment in Value, Service and Quality continues to underpin our performance.

Pub Partners LFL net profit was down approximately 1% while total beer volumes in Brewing & Brands were up 1.8% and own-brewed volumes were down 2.3%.

Our cost mitigation programme is on track to limit net cost inflation to £10-20m in the year while we made further progress on our estate optimisation programme, remaining on course to dispose of 100-110 pubs and open around nine new pubs in the financial year.

Following the announcement in December of an open tender process on the remaining Spirit bonds, as part of our ongoing debt refinancing programme, we have bought back £62m of the Spirit A5 bonds to date.

While the ongoing uncertainty around Brexit may still have an impact on consumer confidence and spending during the year, we remain confident of our outlook for the financial year. We remain focused on our strategic priorities of driving profitable sales growth, developing a more streamlined and efficient organisation, and further strengthening and improving the flexibility of our capital structure to deliver long-term value for our shareholders.

Thank you all for the info. I will be using the coins from the Christmas pudding this year to buy myself the required number of shares. Hopefully I will then get the vouchers in time for the summer when I enjoy the locals beer garden. Have a wonderful Christmas all
