NTV Go to Wetherspoons. They knock out their food in no time, plus there is no dress code so builders and wimmin with fearsome tattoos, very welcome. Abbott is usually £2.69 a pint or less. Plus the bloke wots owns it is a Brexiteer. And you can buy their shares if you get bored.

'World Cup fever'

Major sporting events have been known to cost millions in lost productivity, so employers will be pleased to see England’s group games kick off out of work hours in afternoon or evening slots. Pub groups like Greene King will be similarly pleased with the schedule, which should maximise the numbers heading out to enjoy the games.

Although I'm not invested here A0002577 (I'm on MARS) I wouldn't rule out your £8.

When consumer spending picks up, which it will in due course as interest rates normalise as this is the last thing left form the recession that needs fixing (unemployment fixed, wage growth fixed, inflation fixed, house prices stable), those clever analysts in London will be telling us the Brewers need to take on more gearing and debt and that they haven't invested enough! Debt will again be seen as good not bad!

I too am a long term admirer of GNK - especially their beer which I used to drink inordinate amounts of both when I worked for them (over 50 years ago) and since.

Don't usually invest in shares of this type - I am too biased but couldn't resist buying in at £4.50.

Some investors get really silly around ex-div dates - especially when the dividend is comparatively large - which it is in this case.

My comment about £8 was tongue-in-cheek - but I won't be surprised if it does get there. Even more likely if England do well in the world cup which they last did when I worked for GNK.

Cheers - A000

Slim, I would imagine. Remember the pre-close trading update forecast a fall in adjusted pre-tax profit from c.£274m to £240-245m and talked of the "challenging" environment of restricted consumer spending and (mainly Government-inspired) increased costs. I'm a fan of GNK and remain a long-term holder but would be surprised to see any sharp recovery in the share price until they manage a return to growth.

Yes, Mr BearBull has been looking at this for a few weeks now so has taken his time to buy in. What's the betting that it will go up to £8 as the big summer dividend approaches it's ex div date.

Investors Chronicle:

'Mr Bearbull' ... "...In Greene King’s case, the figures work out decently. It requires considerable pessimism to get valuations below the current share price while it’s easy to get estimates clear of £10 per share.

For estimates to come in between £7 and £8, the group’s bosses don’t have to do anything that special – trim a bit of capex here, squeeze a bit of working capital there. Okay, in practice it’s not that easy; why would it be in an industry as constrained for growth as operating pubs?

Even so, with the dividend payout looking under no particular pressure, I feel assured that buying shares in Greene King won’t be using spare cash to burn a hole in the Bearbull Income Portfolio’s pocket (see Bearbull, 11 May 2018).

So half of the fund’s £40,000 in cash has now found a home.

Do Sam Smiths not supply their own water from a borehole (and previously Thwaites)?

1.2m potential applicants, at £5,250 per WSSL application (some of which are bound to fail) = £6bn

I thought the country was hard up?

Hi Phil, it's a nice bounce back from the lows.
I thought around Q3 of 2018 may be a good longer term buying area,
it's happened sooner.
