hedgehog 100: "Energy-as-a-service will transform the sector Providers, under pressure from new industry entrants, could look to move into the as-a-service market to diversify their offering BY HEIDA VELLA - FEBRUARY 14, 2019 As the utility industry continues to undergo major transformation driven by decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitisation, an emerging business model, known as ‘energy-as-a-service’, is set to disrupt it further. This broad umbrella term describes the growing sub-market of selling not only energy, but also technology, analytics, personalised services and even access to the grid. “We are seeing more effort now to develop a new retail model than at any time over the last 100 years,” says James Sprinz, head of decentralised energy at Bloomberg NEF. The trend is driven, in part, by advances in technology, and the desire of residential and business consumers to reduce costs and/or their carbon emissions. But also, says Mr Sprintz, by major European energy suppliers trying to claw back market share lost to renewables and new markets entrants, such as smaller players including Good Energy and Ovo Energy. “Energy providers are looking at other things they can sell besides electricity, which has seen a large increase in capital in the market, as well as more mergers and acquisitions,” he adds. ... Big Six moving into energy-as-a-service by acquiring new companies ... Though still relatively nascent, this market is poised to grow and diversify, especially with the continued emergence of electric vehicles and smart cities. rolo7: Investors seem to have missed last fridays news, high volume today all buys? Nice divi here also rising possibly, throw of cash in the 1st half.
bignads: I'm a user because although they're not the cheapest, they're the only 100% renewable electricity company in the market and that's a brand value I'm interested in. Consumers don't always go for the cheapest - they buy the brand (which is great in a highly commoditised market like electricity) and good energy has the strongest brand for this niche in the market. They're never going to be EDF or its equivalent, but they are building up a loyal customer base that isn't going to switch the next time the Daily Mail runs a rip-off Britain campaign. I'm an investor in this company because the politics of energy (renewables targets, energy security, global warming, etc) point to the economics of renewables having to be brought into line with fossil-fuel generation (or nuclear) as the majority of customers, including many on this board I'd guess, won't switch unless the offering is competitive. Unfortunately for the Government and tax-payer, that means subsidies.
