I guess we think it's cheap now and people want it cheaper before they pile in... always manipulated by the big boys

"I am sure brexit doesn’t help either"...

The appalling way Brexit is being 'conducted' IS beneficial in boosting the sterling value of GSK's predominantly non-sterling earnings.

Losos, many thanks for the info re another possible amendment to current divi taxation. I'm aware of the basic ISA restrictions, thanks, but I'm hoping to generate sufficient (untaxed) divi income. My entire portfolio has doubled in less than three years through capital gains and reinvested dividends.

Woodhawk - "recent large reduction in tax relief on dividends"

There is a possible 'U' turn comming on this as it's tied up with the self employed NI contribution fiasco. I am hoping that they will switch it back to £5K which will hardly make any difference to the HMRC income and will allow a modest addition to ones pension.

ISA's are fine but remember any money you take out can NOT be put back, if you are already retired that means your ISA pot will gradually get smaller and smaller just when you might need it to grow to fund future health care etc. (ie when you're really old and crinkly haha)

GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK.LN) reported on Monday that it had received European marketing authorization for the self-injectable formulation of Benlysta--a drug for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus.

The pharmaceutical giant said that the European Commission had approved the new formulation as an add-on therapy for patients afflicted by a high degree of disease activity despite standard therapy.

The approval is for a single-dose pre-filled syringe and a single-dose pre-filled pen--as a once-weekly injection of 200 milligrams, the company said.

The newly approved version of the drug adds to the existing intravenous formulation, which was licensed for use in Europe in 2011.

Will be interesting to see what happens to General Electric's shares; it just cut its dividend by 50% to fund turnaround efforts.

There is a price attached to paying that divdend.

GSK is trading back to 2013 levels,
meanwhile their net debt has increased by nearly £6 Billion over that time.

Worth pointing out that some analysts having been banging on about GSK ditching its dividend for years on end and yet GSK has remained one of the most consistent dividend payers in the FTSE throughout. Worth looking at the long term perspective.

The fact is, sensible shareholders are happy to support a cut in the dividend if it is announced alongside a clear and appropriate strategy for growth.

I'm with you Dr Biotech - storm in a teacup here, imo. Heading for 6% yield here now. All my ISA's now in shares (cash ISAs complete waste of time for years yet) and SIPP maxed out too.

In view of the recent large reduction in tax relief on dividends (down to a paltry £2K limit before tax), are dividends as attractive as they used to be? Fine if you can shelter them in an ISA or a SIPP, but otherwise...? At least with capital gains you have a higher limit and more scope for taking profits to suit your likely annual tax position. In fact, noting a recent trend (here and elsewhere) - specifically on ex-divi day - I am convinced the more astute are adjusting their positions around that date to mollify the effects of the new tax regime ;-)

And the Aviva dividend is now above where it was cut to. A 30% cut will enable gsk to invest for growth and pay dividends higher than the current level in the medium term.

Spot on EI what the market truly hates is uncertainty.

There's a misconception a dividend cut would impact the share price,
unlikely to be the case imv, and far less likely to impact at
current share price levels.

What the market does not like is uncertainty, it's far less concerned
with the absolute pay out amount.

Anyone remember what happened to Aviva when they cut the dividend?,
and sold that reduction in the context of investing in the business..
The share price significantly re-rated.

The mistake made by the new CEO was not rebasing the payout with the Q2
strategic update.

EIYes chart wise could easily see it dropping below 1300 to support hope I am wrong though charting is all about probability after all but even if it does drop that low or below will still hold as to me this is cheap at current levels let alone lower.

If the market tanks, cos. like pharma and food retailers always attract the money, this is still a global giant in the pharma world, just going through a rough patch!
