i just think all the players from all the teams are just tired afdter long domestic seasons, therefore have put a bet on newcastle at 28/1 to win the premiership next season coz they have very few in world cup.

I was very surprised that Vassell came off and Owen stayed on.

Apart from one shot, name one occasion when Owen managed to touch the ball twice before giving it away ? I would have bought Fowler on to replace him at half time.

Dont think that Mills can take all the blame for the goal. When he cleared it the swede was quite a long way outside the area, but all the England players were no where near him. And either the ball swerved a long way or Seaman was looking for flies !

Campbell and Cole were also caught out on a couple of occasions and lucky to get away with it.

Mills was also responsible for most of the attacking moves down the right wing, and if you are supposed to be an attacking fullback, then on occasions you will be caught out of position, and thats what your colleagues are there to cover.

Sven needs to sort his tactics out. What does he really want to do - cos it didnt work against Sweden. I also think a good shout at a few players might be a good idea....

Sven made the fundamental error of picking the the lead guitarist of Status Quo in goal. What hope do you have with the rest of his selections?

Suprised at the lack of debate here about England's performance. Reversion to the long ball game was worrying, to put it mildly. But, when you don't have a mid-field, as some of you have written, then you have no choice. Also, no mid-field means a back four under constant pressure. Hargreaves was dire. He may have what it takes, but he was way out of his depth yesterday. A lot to learn. Just wondering.......who's missing from England's 5-1 massacre of Germany last year?

Heskey: Always thought he was nothing more than an 18 yard box diver. His physical size and short sprints into open areas suit the English league game perfectly. But, sheer lack of real skill means he's way out of his depth at this level.

Vassell: Why was he substituted? Incredible.

You need a point against Argentina. Then you need to hammer Nigeria - unlikely - and hope that you get through on goal difference at least.

Ireland: Played the best football I've seen them play in the second half. Literally, a game of two halves. They won the first 1-0 and we might have won the second 2-0. We may also need goal difference to help us qualify.

Its always bloody Leeds aint, Norman Hunter vs Poland in 1973, the Leeds fans running riot everywhere and now bloody Mills.
Anyone see that bit when he span off the pitch and took the corner flag with him?
I noticed all the asians nearby cower with fear when they saw a Leeds player with a weapon!!!!!!

Insipid and lacklustre performance.
Lucky to get a point.
If that's as good as it gets not a chance of getting through to the next round.

Any spreadbets available on the frequency with which Big Ron will say "phenomenal" (his word for anything that's one notch above mediocre)?

I agree with Martini and Jayno.

And the possibility (probability?) that England will be heading home after 2 more games spoils the watching of some other games for me. Not much point in looking at various countries just to see what kind of opposition they might provide for England, if England are not going to be there.

Owen is great when he plays by instinct. But if he pauses to think he loses the ball every time. It looked almost like he'd been told to do something different from his normal game and it wasn't working. Maybe passing the captaincy to him was a distracting move. I was pleased to see Hargreaves in the starting lineup - but like Jayno says - he should have been brought off. His passing became very sloppy quite early on. Heskey - yes - better nearer the middle but full marks for making the best of the job he was given.

Dyer I've never rated, and saw nothing to change my mind (though admittedly the team was in a mess before he got there today).

Difficult to fathom why the team played the way it did. So disjointed and uninspired. Very very disappointing. Maybe they were in the know about something about Beckham that we've not yet been told.... hope not.

ENGLAND: No basics in the middle, they did not defend in front of the 18 yard box. There was no closing down opponents in midfield, no movement off the ball (look at the times Scholes had to wait to pass it 10 yards) and the first touch in general is terrible. Scholes is in my opinion a great player but he is no midfield general I think they need at least 3 in the centre midfield including a natural ball winner to have a chance at competing. I don't rate the defence at all, so I would try and defend through the middle, as such I would play..

Well today England just did not click with nobody really wanting to use passing within the midfield to create space . Long high balls to small central forwards for big central defenders is absolute wee buns . fancy haircuts and playing for various high profile league teams is no guarentee of national team success .

I don't know if anyone else was watching ITV but it's time they got rid of Ron Atkinson as a match commentater.....one of his worst ridiculous speaks after England had scored was only 2 Swedes could get into the England team.....Oh dear by the end it was how many England players could make the Swedish bench !

The only honest commentater was Robson (Newcastle manager) .

Afraid so Martini

Very strange how after the goal we just kept kicking direct forward over mid-field. Was this to avoid using Beckham? or some other tactic? It lost us the match when it was there for the taking, that's for sure.

I don't blame Danny Mills for one slight error. He was one of the best players today. English defence also excellent. Vassell brilliant but needs to do more teamwork moves, not just dribbling.

Heskey no good on left wing. Has to play centre/right forward to do anything effective, though I accept that's where many want to play and we need more strength on left.

Beckham supposedly tired, but he looked suddenly dodgy before half-time and his facial expression coming off suggested more than fatigue.

Owen had poor game, and suffered his normal first touch problem. He cannot trap direct fast balls that come to him. He almost always pings them forward several feet then loses possesion.

Hargreaves should have been taken off at least 30 minutes before the end. He was completely spent out.

Butt & Sheringham will have to feature in next two games to have any hope of getting through. Much as I would love to say differently, I think we will be lucky to get through, and I can't see us getting much further even if we do.

Martini; seconded. I tell you what, I've seen more desire and passion and ability to hold the ball from most Nationwide teams than that display today. That was more "long ball" than Graham Taylor's wet dreams.

I'm happy to see Germany scoring plenty of goals.....

Bought total goals at 2.8 pre-match - in the money at half-time, and letting it ride (could close at 5.9 - I'd normally take the offer of a profit, but can't be bothered to on this one since the profit exists whatever I do).

Saudi are the worst team I have ever seen in a World Cup on their 1st half "showing".

Fifa has started an investigation into the number of empty seats at the opening match of the World Cup in Seoul.

Despite the drama and excitement of Senegal's 1-0 win over defending champions France the stadium was far from full.

And world football's governing body is concerned that such a showpiece occasion was not a complete sell-out.

We're keen to figure out all the reasons for such a short-fall

Fifa director of communications Keith Cooper

It appears that most of the 3,500 tickets remaining were deliberately held back by the organisers to off-set potential technical hitches.

"In the complex ticketing structure used for this World Cup there's been a merger of the computer data-bases from the ticket agency in Manchester and Japan," Fifa director of communications Keith Cooper told a media conference in Seoul.

"There was a fear this would lead to duplication of ticket sales so a certain number were deliberately held in reserve to help deal with this.

"Only about 100 supporters had to be re-seated last night so we're keen to figure out all the reasons for such a short-fall and hope to have a more precise analysis by tomorrow."

This is the latest headache for the organisers who admitted last week that their deadlines for ticket printing and distribution were a month late, leaving many fans with an anxious wait to see if they arrived on time.

Fifa has also tried to circumvent the black market by only selling tickets on the internet.

There was little evidence of any touts outside the stadium in Seoul for France-Senegal but tickets for England's match with Argentina have been changing hands for inflated sums in Japan.
