NextEra Energy Resources said electric vehicles would make up an increasing share of U.S. energy demand over the next 30 years.

The unit of NextEra Energy Inc. is forming a joint venture with First Student Inc. and First Transit Inc. to pursue the electrification of school and public transportation vehicles across the U.S. and Canada, the companies said Tuesday.

On energy demand:

"The growing shift away from internal combustion engines is expected to drive over one fifth of U.S. energy demand by 2050," said NextEra Energy Resources President and Chief Executive John Ketchum.
