The layman simply couldn't tell the difference, but De Beers have used marketing to their benefit over the years, so people persist in wanting these tiny pieces of glass because of peer pressure. It took the team more than five years to get the technique right, ensuring they are physically and chemically identical to Earth-mined diamonds.
