saw this on FMG foxy22 which might be of interest to you. I have been trading it on oz marketv in last few days. Another weak performance by Fortescue Metals Group in the six months to December 31, with shipments of 82.7 million tonnes the lowest for at least four years. The company – which is the world’s 4th biggest exporter reported a 5% rise in its second-quarter iron-ore shipments as its new higher-grade ore helped lift output. The world’s fourth-largest iron ore producer said it shipped 42.5 million tonnes of ore in the three months to December 31, compared with 40.5 million tonnes a year earlier and 40.2 million tonnes in the September quarter. For the six months to December, Fortescue shipped 80.7 million tonnes of ore, down on the 84.5 million tonnes shipped in the December 2017 half, the 86.1 million shipped in the half year to December 31, 2016, and the 84 million tonnes exported in the six months ending December 31, 2015. But investors won’t worry about that – all they can focus on at the moment is the possible positive impact on Australian iron ore exporters such as Fortescue, BHP, and Rio from the second dam disaster at a Brazilian iron ore mine owned by their biggest rival, Vale. Investors sent the shares up another 4% yesterday to $5.64. They are now up 17% from last Friday when they closed at $4.80.

The Vale announcement yesterday that it is taking a 40 million ton production hit as it handles removal of some 19 dams is good news for other producers. More importantly for FXPO Vale will cut 11 million tonnes of pellet production, which is reported to be 10% of the seaborne market. So both iron ore prices and the pellet premium are set to rise, especially because it takes a lot of time and money to increase pellet production capacity. Could see $90/t pellet premium according to FT. Price action for iron ore and pellets may become clearer after the Chinese New Year holiday.

Hi Foxy22, I tend to agree that it could roll on to around 300p. But looking at iron ore chart, that is likely to fall back as the surge has been too much too quick, even with the VALE issues. BB

Obviously price of iron ore having rocketed is directly correlated to the rise in FXPO. Big jump just today. How much further iron ore can rise before it drops back I wonder? Now above last year's peak in price, though a long off from highs of 2011. BB

Personally foxy I would wait for a pull back. Mine was only a 20% top up... Not seen the chart yet but from memory this is over bought with the RSI at 82%. Last night where it went down to 232p was the obvious top up point but that's with the benefit of hindsight!

Actually hadn't realised it was as much as 10% and will look to bank some decent profit as soon as I can. You have to be in it to win it! If you are going to double up what would your % be Foxy?

Foxy I actually topped up at 234p which is now slightly over share price but I think this was a reasonable entry. I can see it went up to 241p and then retraced on a pullback, but I see no reason why that upward momentum should not continue in coming days. FXPO is about 10% of my portfolio so I think I am balanced about right for now.

Foxy just sold another position as the outlook shorterm here looks so good. If we are reading the situation right it should be a profitable decision. Yes the chart is on side and supply and demand after vale looks very positive too. What we don't need is any conflict in the region.

I am certainly no expert, but looking at chart the share price is just about to breakout through November and April highs and it looks like next stop is the 300p barrier. I am tempted to top up, but would have to sell other positions...nice problem to have!!!
