New coal seam gas proposals in Australia bode well for shale - broker

08:46 20 Mar 2017

London-listed Falcon Oil & Gas is sitting on a potentially huge shale gas resources, but, progress is presently held up by a temporary moratorium on shale gas projects.

Falcon was recently boosted by well successes and big gas estimates

A new proposal in Australia to lift bans on coal seam gas operations bodes well for AIM quoted Falcon Oil & Gas Ltd (LON:FOG), so says stockbroker WH Ireland.

Australia’s deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce is supporting proposals that would see the ban on goal seam gas drilling lifted, so long as landowners are given more of the royalties from subsequent gas production.

“In our opinion, this is a significant policy shift as the country seeks to avoid a looming gas shortage,” WH Ireland analyst Brendan Long said in a note.

“It is important to appreciate that the deputy PM is also agricultural minister and we therefore believe his thinking reflects that of Australia’s rural landowning community – the people who count.

“The general idea is to ensure that landholders benefit directly from gas production, which is an incentive that has proven very effective in the USA.”

Long added: “We believe this could pave the way for comparatively positive developments for shale gas developer in Australia, such as Falcon Oil & Gas.”

Falcon, alongside partners Origin Energy and SASOL, is sitting on potentially huge shale gas resources in Australia’s Northern Territory - though operationally progress is paused by a temporary moratorium on shale gas, whilst the authorities conduct a new evaluation of the emerging industry and its practices.

In February, citing figures produced by Origin Energy, the operator of the 16,000-square kilometres of venture, Falcon said the gross best estimate of gas in place was a world-class 496 trillion cubic feet (TCF). That converts to a massive 82bn barrels of oil potential.

The moratorium on hydraulic fracturing – the necessary process to complete shale gas wells – was introduced by the NT Government on 14 September 2016 and subsequently an independent panel has been established to conduct an independent inquiry and report back to the government.

The panel is looking at all the issues such as the potential impact on the environment but also the potential economic impact.

From the Lse bb Falcon - Potential 100-Bagger?Here's my current take on the situation: Falcon closed on Friday, on the US exchange, with a market cap of approximately $250 million. They currently have a 30% interest in the Beetaloo, in which the Velkerri-B shale has recently been assessed to have 85 TCF of "Technically Recoverable Resources", giving Falcon a 25 TCF share. If further exploration and appraisal work is successful, and those resources turn into a combination of Contingent Resources and Proven Reserves (An estimate 6.6 TCF Gross of "Contingent Resources" was recently given by Origin), I don't think it's unreasonable to think it could be sold at some point, (pending a variety of market factors going forward), for at least $1 Billion per TCF. So Falcon's 25 TCF stake would be worth $25 Billion, ....which just happens to be 100 times the current market cap of the stock. A potential 100-bagger. Nice : ) just my opinionA ten bagger is ok for me !

Tom

I have seen that report from the Guardian but there's also another piece that I read in which it suggests this new NT pipeline is also designed to carry fracked gas. That looks to me like they are planning to for a possible lift of the moratorium or at best an easing of its restriction which may explain the price strength

I am tempted to take a position, maybe 10K shares if I can get them. Any sniff that the moratorium could be lifted and this will explode towards 100p+ mid-year

ps the LSE board is top notch for FOG

hermana - Cove had a fraction of the FOG interest in the assumed 82 TCF recoverable here......who knows what someone will deem FOG to be worth if the moratorium is lifted......

tom111 - Malcy said on his blog recently that they were a '10 bagger from here' if the moratorium gets lifted. At that time they were about 15p.

tom - I can't remember exsctly what Cove had - think it was 2 TCF from memory.....and they went for about GBP 2.40 in the end........not sure how well you can compare the two but it gives you an idea as these guys have about a third of 82 TCF recoverable....in other words......if the moratorium is lifted....expect fireworks here. jmo.
