Sean Smith said on the Proactive interview that Mevalone tends to get used at the end of the growing season. It will be interesting to hear if this years weather has meant a wider application earlier as well as late season.

Attacks of powdery mildew in the vineyards, here's what to do.

This year in the Apulian table grape vines there are strong oidium attacks.
The fungus found favorable conditions for development, as the months of April and May were rainy on average, with temperatures hovering around 20 ° -25 ° C and relative humidity between 65 and 70%.
Given the excellent adaptive capacity to germinate from 6 to 35 ° C, Erysiphe necator is able to perform multiple cycles of infection. In some vineyards, in fact, there has been a rapid increase in the disease it has
compromise a good part of the production.
Moreover, the increase in the rate of growth of the plants has led to rapid shadowing and the extreme rapidity with which the various phenological phases have followed, has often prevented producers from carrying out the necessary cultivation operations in the most suitable periods.

In particular, late defoliation has made it difficult to wet the bunches with plant protection products because they are hidden by the leaves. In some cases, therefore, the oidium has compromised entire vineyards. At the moment, technicians and producers are trying to manage the pathogen, whose presence is evident in many vineyards in the South East of Bari.

However, it is emphasized that integrated defense strategies are complicated by supply specifications, which impose a limited number of residues. Surely it is essential to have acted preventively with appropriate anti-oxydic treatments, but in case of symptoms it is recommended to use dry ventilated sulfur, because it remains one of the few products that can block the growth of the pathogen.

Maybe Sipcam is doing some donkey work for Bayer and will play second fiddle to Bayer, yet retaining some tech right's and that of Mevalone moving forward.

Who knows and where might that leave Eastman? One would assume Bayer has a bigger part to play, but how and when?

While we wait for the world markets to recover from Trump's trade war, it is worth considering that when Lykele did his "homework" with former Bayer colleagues would he ask the question -

Why are you guys looking at using Eden IP for underarm deodorant for dogs?
Isn't it good for lots of other stuff?

What do you think might have been the response?

Bayer has had this technology for some years - and now they are motoring forward to launch mouth freshener for dogs as well? Is that it?

Well I think not.
I and I am sure others think this Bayer relationship could be just a wee bit more than making dog farts smell sweet.

Remember how Lykele described his area of expertise with Bayer and how he thought he could contribute to the development of Eden.

Interesting too that Sipcam doesn't have exclusivity on co-encapsulation.

Anyhow, just thought I'd mention it.

Pollutants from agriculture a serious threat to world's water
New report paints a worrying picture, provides recommendations on what can be done

20 June 2018, Rome - Water pollution from unsustainable agricultural practices poses a serious risk to human health and the planet's ecosystems, a problem often underestimated by policymakers and farmers alike, cautions a new report.

In many countries the biggest source of water pollution today is agriculture — not cities or industry — while worldwide, the most common chemical contaminant found in groundwater aquifers is nitrate from farming, according to More People, More Food, Worse Water? A Global Review of Water Pollution from Agriculture, launched by FAO and the International Water Management Institute at a conference in Tajikistan (19-22 June).

Modern agriculture is responsible for the discharge of large quantities of agrochemicals, organic matter, sediments and saline trading into water bodies, the report says.

Neither botrytis nor insects.

3Logy and Epik SL by Sipcam Italia as solutions to effectively combat both gray mold and chapels and cochineals of the vineyards, including Scafoideo, a golden Flavescence vector.

Leafhoppers and cochineals, but also fillominatori, bugs and Fillossera.
A pool of entomological adversities of certain weight, even considering that some of these insects also carry pernicious diseases like the golden Flavescence. One on all scfoideo, although lately it seems that also Orientus ishide, cicadellide deltocefalino, is able to transmit the plasmid of this pathology.

But another topic of great interest is the one related to gray mold, or botrytis. A pathology against which it is good to intervene much earlier than previously thought, or to bloom. A positioning not contemplated to date by the integrated production regulations, but which on the basis of new technical evidence should instead be re-evaluated and included in anti-bribery defense programs.

All the above topics were dealt with during a series of conferences organized by Sipcam Italia, entitled "Innovations in the defense of the vine", meetings held in Florence, Bologna, Soave and San Stino di Livenza, which will be followed by two more. in Piedmont.
Enrico Marchesini, from Agrea's study center, dealt with the theme "The phytophagous grapevines between old problems and new emergencies", while Vittorio Rossi of the Catholic University of Piacenza elaborated on the aspects of the "Epidemiology of Botrytis cinerea and new orientations in defense from gray mold ".

In both cases, whether they are insects or gray mold, the modeling and specific field observations seem to give a big hand in indicating the ideal moments of use of specific phytosanitary products. As for insects, the period with the red dot is usually the one included from around mid-June to the first ten days of July. In fact, starting from mid-June, the scaphoid nymphs are able to transfer the flavescence plasmid, passing from the second to the third age, while the migration of the cochineal nymphs, such as Planococcus ficus, is the only phase in early July. these insects can be checked before they are protected under their waxy badges.

In the same period the first adults of Scafoideo also appear, striking which eliminates most of the single annual generation of the insect. Provided obviously to use the right insecticide.

As for botrytis, the great struggle between companies in the sector is that aimed at conquering a space in the phase of pre-closure cluster, also called phase B. The A is in fact that of flowering, while C and D are respectively the veraison and pre-harvest. Lately, however, we have highlighted the strong benefits of intercepting the botrytis already in the flowering phase, when through the infections of the floral tissues the pathology can move into the heart of the acinini in the process of formation and remain there also in larval form.

This implies that even when grapes are healthy when harvested, substances can be found inside the berries produced by botital infections, substances easily identified by analysis and strongly opposed by the distribution chains of oenological products, such as gluconic acid. Moreover, the treatment in phase A allows to greatly reduce the inoculum of the pathogen, simplifying the defense in the following months. Maybe even lightening the pre-harvest treatments to the full advantage of the residual profile of the grapes.

Two products suitable for the purpose
Against insects and botrytis Sipcam Italy deploys two extremely effective products, functional to the most modern strategies of integrated control of adversity, ie Epik SL, containing acetamiprid, and 3Logy, antibotritic based on natural terpenes.
The former can be used in compliance with the useful entomofauna and relies on a liquid formulation developed in the Sipcam Italia laboratories to distinguish itself as to practicality of use, selectivity on crops and miscibility with other plant protection products and nutritional products.

The use of Epik SL in the hot period for insects therefore allows excellent control of leafhoppers, cochineals, phyllomers and Phylloxera, while 3Logy, positioned in bloom, allows to immediately eliminate botrytis infections to the advantage of the final quality of grapes. Basically, the right product in the right positioning, to the benefit of the sustainability of agricultural practices.

The first campaign to measure pesticides in the air starts in France
Glyphosate and chlordecone are among the 90 substances that will be sought to better understand the exposure of the population.

We know that the French, especially in large cities, breathe air often too heavy, especially fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. But what about pesticides? The data is missing. To fill this gap, a first campaign to measure pesticide residues in the air was launched Monday, June 25 by the National Agency for Food Safety, Environment and Labor (ANSES). It will last one year with the objective of better knowing the exposure of the population and defining a surveillance strategy that is lacking today. Because if the presence of pesticides is controlled in food or in water, it is not regulated in the air.

"This is a major subject," says Mathilde Merlo, head of plant protection phytopharmacovigilance at ANSES. It's a campaign that has no equivalent at European level. In total, nearly 90 substances will be sought. They were selected based on their persistence in the air, their degree of use and their health hazard. Targeted substances, says ANSES, are not only part of the so-called phytopharmaceutical products, they can also be present in certain biocides, veterinary drugs or antiparasitic agents for human use.

Read our survey on Chlordecone:

The poisoned Antilles for generations
Unsurprisingly, there is chlordecone, which contaminates the West Indies, or glyphosate, for which the government has committed to a definitive exit within three years. The stalking of the controversial herbicide should siphon off a good part of the budget, estimated at a little over a million euros. "Glyphosate requires a heavy investment in research, confirms Mathilde Merlo. Unlike other pesticides, we had to develop an analytical technique of its own. "

Samples will be taken from fifty sites in mainland France and overseas departments and territories, to reach a total of about 1,500 samples over the duration of the campaign. The distribution of sites was chosen to take into account the different types of residential areas (52% urban and 48% rural) and agricultural production: field crops (40%), vineyards (22%), arboreal ( 22%), market gardening (14%) and livestock farming (6%).

In the field, it is the approved associations for air quality monitoring, such as Airparif or Air PACA, which will carry out the measurements. The National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks will pilot sample analysis and data mining. The results are expected in late 2019 or early 2020. They will establish a first inventory of average contamination levels in France of pesticide residues in ambient air. The latter will be supplemented by a targeted study on the exposure of local residents in agricultural areas. Led by ANSES and Public Health France, it should start in 2019.

For the association Generations futures, which has been fighting for twenty years against the dangers of pesticides, it is not useful to wait for new study results in the face of the "urgency to act". It supports the bill tabled June 13 by the MP for Gironde Loïc Prud'homme to protect residents by establishing a buffer zone, not treated with the most dangerous pesticides around the living areas.

Regulatory pressure on reduce Nitrogen impact on environment. Nitrate pollution/ run off

Too much nitrogen harms the environment and the economy Over the past century humans have caused unprecedented • changes to the global nitrogen cycle, converting atmospheric di-nitrogen (N 2) into many reactive nitrogen (N r) forms, doubling the total fixation of N r globally and more than tripling it in Europe. Th e increased use of N • r as fertilizer allows a growing world population, but has considerable adverse eff ects on the environment and human health. Five key societal threats of N r can be identified: to water quality, air quality, greenhouse balance, ecosystems and biodiversity, and soil quality. Cost–benefit analysis highlights how the overall environ-• mental costs of all N r losses in Europe (estimated at €70–€320 billion per year at current rates) outweigh the direct economic benefits of N r in agriculture. Th e highest societal costs are associated with loss of air quality and water quality, linked to impacts on ecosystems and especially on human health.

Policies and management Existing policies related to N • r have been largely established in a fragmented way, separating Nr forms, media and sectors. Despite the eff orts made over many years to reduce Nr inputs into the environment, most of the Nr- related environmental quality objectives and environmental action targets have not been achieved to date. Th e five societal threats and N budgets are starting points • for a more-holistic management of Nr . The Assessment identifies a package of 7 key actions for overall management of the European nitrogen cycle. These key actions relate to: Agriculture (3 actions), Transport and Industry (1 action), Waste water treatment (1 action) and Societal consumption patterns (2 actions). Th e key actions provide an integrated package to develop • and apply policy instruments. Th e need for such a package is emphasized by cost–benefit analysis that highlights the role of several N r forms especially nitrogen oxides (NO x ), ammonia (NH 3) and N r loss to water, in addition to nitrous oxide (N
