14/7/2002 16:44 | WISDOM comes in various forms... some are not obvious Lightning flashes, Sparks shower, In one blink of your eyes, You have missed seeing. I hope you do not find this thread, and its Title to be in bad taste. The idea is to open our minds to the many sources of wisdom, including those which are not obvious. ... One day, Jizo received one of Hofuku's disciples and asked him,"How does your teacher instruct you?" "My teacher instructs me to shut my eyes and see no evil thing; to cover my ears and hear no evil sound; to stop my mind-activities and form no wrong ideas," the monk replied. "I do not ask you to shut your eyes," Jizo said, "but you do not see a thing. I do not ask you to cover your ears, but you do not hear a sound. I do not ask you to cease your mind-activities, but you do not form any idea at all." ... Two monks were arguing about the temple flag waving in the wind. One said, "The flag moves." The other said, "The wind moves." They argued back and forth but could not agree. Hui-neng, the Sixth Patriarch, said, "Gentlemen! It is not the flag that moves. It is not the wind that moves. It is your mind that moves." The two monks were struck with awe. --- The idea for this thread was inspired by a Hedge Fund Start-up conference which I recently attended. One of the other participants was blind, and had to be led from room to room by a guide. I noticed his very deep concentration during of of the talks, and it occurred to me that he may be absorbing more that the rest of us, who were distracted by what we are seeing. In a weak moment, I asked someone else why he thought he was there. The person who answered was probably joking, when he told me: "Oh. He's a famous chartist!" At first, I wanted to laugh. But then I realised that the comment forced me to question some of my prejudices and attitudes. That's not a bad thing when it comes to Markets and to Life ! ...
