17/4/2019 19:18 | Are they up to their old tricks again? I'm long gone from here when management managed to turn the cash-generative Roxboro into Dialight and I looked into the mystery of how they turned £15m net cash into £4.5m net debt over 22 months while reporting 'profits' and paying dividends. The answer was that they were capitalising 'development expenditure' as if it was exceptional one-off expense adding to the capital value of the company but it was actually necessary annual recurring expenditure necessary to keep products up-to-date and competitive in a fast-moving market (i.e. it should have been reported as a revenue expense). Latest accounts show the same sort of thing going on - 'development costs' being capitalised, capital 'investment' in increased inventory whilst equivalent amounts are being written off via depreciation. Last trading statement suggests they plan to carry on that way ("We have continued to execute on our strategy to address an expanded industrial LED market by increasing our capacity to develop new products, with the first of the new products targeting an expanded market expected to launch in May 2019.") Watch the cash; they're either making it or they're not. | jeffian | |
