12/5/2021 08:18 | Compass Group PLC said Wednesday that pretax profit for the first half of fiscal 2021 fell sharply as revenue was hit by the coronavirus pandemic but it anticipates a gradual improvement in revenue in the third quarter. The U.K. catering contractor said pretax profit for the six months to March 31 was 133 million pounds ($188.1 million) compared with GBP787 million for the same period last year. Underlying operating profit for the period fell 65% to GBP290 million, with a margin of 3.4%. Revenue for the half was GBP8.44 billion, down from GBP12.48 billion in the year-earlier period. Compass said it anticipates a gradual improvement in revenue and an operating margin of between 4.5% and 5.0% in the third quarter. "With the gathering pace of vaccination rollouts across our major markets, we are working closely with our clients to prepare to reopen their sites safely, although the picture across the world remains mixed," Chief Executive Dominic Blakemore said. 25/3/2021 08:55 | Compass Group said Thursday that it expects a 28% fall in organic revenue for the three months to March 31 as the company starts to lap the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on fiscal 2020 revenue. The U.K. catering contractor said that there may be a possible 930 million pounds ($1.27 billion) hit on 2020 revenue and a GBP36 million hit on operating profit, stemming from negative foreign exchange rates. "Trading results from our overseas operations are translated at the average exchange rates for the period. If current spot rates continue to March 31, 2021 foreign exchange translation would negatively impact the 2020 half year revenue by GBP456 million and operating profit by GBP38 million," the company said. The company said that organic revenue for the first half of fiscal 2021--which ends March 31--is expected to be around 31% lower, and that in both the second quarter and half year the company has been operating at around 71% of its 2019 revenue. "While the vaccination efforts around the globe are advancing, the pace of volume recovery remains uncertain. Encouragingly, the pipeline of new business and client retention continue to be strong," the company said. Write to Anthony O. 21/1/2021 09:02 | Fully expect this to mirror recent outperformance of WH Smith. They do kind of the same thing. Both SMWH and CPG sell product in locations where the customer has no other choice allowing them to slightly overcharge. CPG is deeply profitable. And it is set to be more so as it will emerge from the pandemic into a world with less competition. | weemonkey | |

24/11/2020 08:01 | Compass Group PLC on Tuesday reported a fall in pretax profit for fiscal 2020 on lower revenue, as the coronavirus pandemic has severely hurt the business in the second quarter. The U.K. catering contractor made a pretax profit of 210 million pounds ($279.8 million) for the year ended Sept. 30, compared with a restated GBP1.49 billion in fiscal 2019. Revenue fell to GBP19.94 billion from GBP24.88 billion a year earlier. Coronavirus restrictions reduced volumes in business and industry, education, and sports and leisure in all regions, the company said. As anticipated in April, the board declared no final dividend for the year in an effort to preserve resources amid the coronavirus pandemic. "The board will keep future dividends under review and will restart payments when it is considered appropriate to do so," the company said Tuesday. Underlying operating margin was 2.9%, in line with the company's guidance for around 3%. Compass said it expects underlying operating margin for the first quarter of fiscal 2021 to be around 2.5%. The company said it expects the figure to return to profitability in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021.
