I've tried to assess the value of the tungsten in place. I'm not really sure, but have used low values per pound of WO3 (tungsten trioxide). The lowest price I can find is $20/lb for near pure, although I've seen higher quoted.
Accordingly 36m tonnes of 0.09% of ore equates to a reserves value (for the mine reserves only, excluding the tailings) around $1.45bn. A very large figure relative to mkt.cap!
I don't know how much it will cost to extract/purify etc. but they say "relatively low cost".
A few tungsten tailings ventures have sprung up in the wake of the spike in the price of Tungsten, and all express viability at 'a range of raw tungsten prices' so this looks like a goer. I guess they will try and make this tailings side pay before going full-on into the mine proper, although they are test drilling the mine margins now and, presumably, if they find higher grade (0.7%+) ore they will probably start in the mine itself. The tailings plant may also be suitable for processing/refining the mine tungsten further down the line.
I guess they'll do it simultaneously; drill the long test-bores whilst planning/pricing/sourcing the tailings re-treatment plant and equipment. Second-hand gear may be available.

Not sure if I'm right so DYOR.
Very promising indeed though.

All IMPO.
Jo.

Mina La Parrilla, Almoharín, Cáceres, Extremadura, España
The biggest tungsten mine in Spain. Presently inactive.
--------------
The company has now begun a 1,500 metre drilling campaign to assess the mine. During the four month programme a total of 5 holes will be drilled targeting higher grade intersections at the edge of the ore body.

As well as the deposits available from the mine itself, Caspian also has access to 2.5 million tons of "tailings" or residue from previous mining activity. It expects to extract tungsten from those tailings within the next 18 months.

Still haven't worked out value of resource.

I'm trying to find a way of valuing the tungsten reserves estimate. If anyone has the answer, please post it. Also if anyone knows how much it costs to refine/extract and the cost of doing the same with the tailings.
Cheers,
Jo.

Caspian starts tungsten drilling

Re-focused Caspian Holdings (CSH) has begun drilling Spain's major La Parrilla tungsten project, recently bought for $1 million (£625,000).

The AIM-quoted company, which raised £210,000 at 0.25p 13 days ago to fund part of the mostly paper purchase of the project's Spanish parent company, expects drilling to take four months to appraise La Parrilla, reckoned by consultant SRK in 2008 to hold 36 million tonnes of ore with 0.09 per cent WO3 tungsten tioxide, as well as 2.5 million tonnes of tailings from earlier mining.

That would make Parrilla, in south-west Spain's Extramadura region, one of western world's largest deposits of tungsten, whose price has more than doubled in three years, says Caspian, headed by the entrepreneurial Michael Masterman. The company, which has dabbled in different resource projects in different parts of the world since its 2004 float at 23p, maintains Parrilla offers a 'low-cost, high-margin resource development opportunity'.

Caspian shares have been notably poor performers of late, trading between 0.62p and 0.23p over the past year, and now stand at 0.33p, up 0.04p this morning. They value the company at £2.6 million and, not without risk, offer speculative recovery potential.

Looks like 2012 could be an interesting year for rare earth elements\metals - No new significant product of tungsten in 2012 and a decrease in Chinese Tungsten exports -

Caspian climbs on progress at Spanish tungsten mine
Wed 11 Jan 2012

CSH - Caspian Holdings

LONDON (SHARECAST) - Caspian Holdings, the oil and metals explorer, headed north on news of quick progress at its tungsten mining site in the Extremadura region of southwest Spain.

Caspian claims the La Parrilla project contains "one of the largest tungsten deposits in the western world".

Over the last three years the price of tungsten has more than doubled.

Over the past year Caspian shares have dropped 38%, but rose by 0.02p on the tungsten mine update to 0.3p.

Caspian Holdings shares advance as drilling starts at La Parrilla tungsten project
8:19 am by Jamie Ashcroft The project is located in southwest Spain

Caspian Holdings (LON:CSH) shares shot up around 15 per cent in early deals as it announced the start of a drill programme at the La Parrilla tungsten mine in Spain.
It comes after the firm acquire the mine in December as it took control of Iberian Resources Spain.
The firm plans to drill out 1,500 metres of diamond drill core so that it can appraise potential extensions to the La mine. It says that five holes will be drilled during the four month programme.
The work will target higher grade intersections in the edge of the orebody, Caspian added. This would be an open pit zone, located to the west of the existing mining operation.
Caspian says the historic mine has an estimated resource of 36 million tonnes, at a grade of 0.09 per cent tungsten oxide, which makes it one of the largest tungsten deposits in the western world.
Additionally Caspian said that pilot testing is underway at the La Parrilla tailings project. It believes that the findings will allow it to define and optimise the industrial process for the treatment of the tailings. It will also confirm the final industrial plant design and layout.
Given that the price of tungsten has more than doubled the price of tungsten has increased rapidly over the last 3 years by more than double.
La Parrilla tailings deposit and tungsten mine development offer a low cost, high margin resource development opportunity, the company said.
At 8:16 on AIM Caspian shares were up 0.05p, or 17.5 per cent, trading at 0.34p.

Drilling Campaign Commences at La Parrilla Tungsten Project

Caspian (AIM:CSH), which completed the acquisition of Iberian Resources Spain ('IRS) in December 2011, has moved quickly to commence evaluation of the La Parrilla tungsten mine located in south west Spain.

Caspian has commenced a 1,500 metre diamond core drilling campaign to appraise extensions to the La Parrilla mine. During the programme, which will run for the next 4 months, a total of 5 holes will be drilled targeting higher grade intersections in the edge of the orebody, on which drilling results will be reported progressively.

The drilling is targeted in an open zone to the west of the existing mine pit. Hole HR-04, drilled in early 2008, intersected 55.20m, from 150.90m to 206.10m, at 0.73% WO(3) in a section with several greissenised granite fingers.

The historic mine resource estimated by SRK in 2008 is 36.0m tonnes at 0.09% WO(3) making it one of the largest tungsten deposits in the western world.

At the La Parrilla tailings project pilot plan testing is currently being undertaken from which the final results will enable Caspian to define and optimise the industrial process for the treatment of the tailings and confirm the final industrial plant design and layout.

The price of tungsten has increased rapidly over the last 3 years by more than double. The La Parrilla tailings deposit and tungsten mine development offer a low cost, high margin resource development opportunity for Caspian.
