Looking at the cineworld chart anyone would have though that no one will ever go the the cinema again. Buying.

I'm no chartist, but the chart has looked pretty bad for some time with maybe some support around current levels. This chart pattern can be enough for many to sell it, which won't affect Cinemark in the same way.

Looks to be about an 8% yield at the current price.

But then why isn't Cinemark dropping like this? I wonder if there's a big holder exiting/ cutting his position as this recent weakness seems unjustified.

I must admit my heart sank when I saw that RNS yesterday stating that a big bank had got involved in CINE equity swaps. Dont think ive ever seen one of my shares fare well when these 'schemes' lurk in the background

The selling here is akin to a sell rec somewhere, but havent see one. The usual shorter funds seem to be loading up as well.

Maybe sellers are going for the fact that being 2nd half loaded, good news may be 5-6 months away?

Anyone have any thoughts as to why this continues to only go down? Looking at related names, Everyman, Cinemark, Cineplex they all are holding their own so surely its not a structural issue.

Cannacord note:

Cineworld's interim results were marginally better than we expected but it's been a tough H1 with group admissions down -14.4% (pro-forma) to 136m and box office -14.9%. However, the performances in Retail (-7.7%) and Other (+2.4%) show that Cineworld is being successful in driving higher overall revenue per customer.

This is encouraging for H2 where the strong film slate should highlight the operational gearing. Management remains confident of hitting market expectations, H2 has started strongly but the final outcome will depend on the success of Star Wars. We retain our Buy recommendation and 355p target price.

Regarding Netflix killing cinema, I remember the boom in video players and video shops in the 80s also being the time big multiplex cinema were being built everywhere.. There was a resurgence in interest in movies and lots of blockbuster movies being released as opposed to the dirth of the same in the 70s when the old flea pits were closing down.
Younger people are shunning the boozy nights in pubs and clubs in preference to so called ”date nights” which is a movie and a meal out. I don’t envisage cinema dying out anytime soon either.

I agree, it's all very well watching a blockbuster movie on your TV but even with the advances in TV picture and sound quality its not the same as watching on the big screen. OK you have to deal with the annoying person next to you rustling their sweet wrappers but I can live with that. All I ever hear about is that people value experiences more than physical things so I don't envisage the cinema dying out soon, but maybe evolving to offer something more.Incidentally, just looked at Everyman which according to people I know who've been, it's a great experience. I had previously looked at the stock but it was too expensive for me, however looking at its recent share price performance the market quite likes it.Cineworld as far as I'm concerned looks massively undervalued.

Going to the cinema is an experience, maybe gettin pricey, but if the cinema is dead, then so is the theatre, opera, ballet, pretty much everything that involves leaving the house!!!!

Has anyone noticed Cinemark recent performance in the US. Seemed to me that it's been quite closely correlated with Cineworld till recently. Now like most things US based, the performance has been much better. I also see they reported numbers last week which at headline glance looked ok.I can't understand the weakness in Cineworld but we have results due on Thursday so maybe all will become clear. I don't buy into the argument that Netflix and the like are taking over from the cinema's either....are we all to become hermits and never leave our house!

Thanks for that phil, pretty impressive movie numbers there...

Cinema blockbusters and a surge in flights helped boost consumer spending in July as the High Street continued to struggle.

Consumer spending was 1.7 per cent higher than in the same month a year earlier, thanks to film releases like Toy Story 4 and The Lion King, according to Barclaycard.

Movie ticket sales were up 14.8 per cent

The fluctuations in film releases is just noise - but it's always moved the share price - I've held Cine since 2009 until a few weeks ago Sold because 1 special dividend - would rather they invested or paid down debt 2 competition in UK getting better or rather much less worse than it used to be - eg odeon 3 Netflix/changing industry dynamics as the big studios all go streaming - this has always been a fear and never realised Still keeping a watch on the stock - I've done v v well holding them over the years I

The note:

'Peel Hunt: buying opportunity at Cineworld'

Peel Hunt has upgraded Cineworld (CINE), arguing the investment case is still intact despite the share price reflecting profit concerns.

Analyst Ivor Jones upgraded his recommendation from ‘add’ to ‘buy’ but lowered the target price from 320p to 300p. The shares fell 1.4% to 251.6p yesterday.

‘Next week’s interims will show the impact on profits of a weaker release schedule. This may explain the recent weakness in the share

price,’ said Jones.

‘With the investment case intact, strong film releases ahead, and the majority of the earnings in US dollars, we see the current share price as a buying opportunity.’

Peel Hunt upgrade to buy, TP educed to £3. I have Cine trading at 11 times 2019 earnings which feels great value. I wonder if we are still being punished for a quiet first quarter albeit it was well flagged. Time for a top up.

Hardly strange with Avengers Endgame now the highest grossing film of all time and with all the other releases this year such as Aladdin, Toy Story 4 etc. Results are bound to be good. I’m holding here and don’t base buy / sell decision on chart support, rather company news, fundamentals and future prospects.

Record cinema attendances seem strange. Guess thats why Cineworld can keep putting their prices up, and up and up. Circa £18 for an IMAX viewing now. Well over £10 for a bog standard ticket. Struth.
