22/10/2020 12:12 | It looks like people don't appreciate having one asset in a country at war (sort of) and the other in a country that has just had a coup (sort of). | jc2706
20/10/2020 15:21 | Surprising news in Kyrgyzstan re. arrest of one of the kingpins who is alledged to have funneled nearly a billion dollars out of the country and who is said to be the puppet master behind one of the major parties. Could be a positive sign. | casual47

19/10/2020 07:25 | Foreign Minister proposed to create an Operational Headquarters to protect business and foreign investors The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Ruslan Kazakbayev proposed to create an Operational Headquarters in Kyrgyzstan to protect business and foreign investors. This proposal was announced the day before, on October 18, at a meeting of heads of government agencies with a group of leading foreign companies, the International Business Council (IBC) reported. The meeting was attended by members of the IBC - mining companies Kaz Minerals Bozymchak, Vertex Gold Company, Eti Bakir Tereksay, Chaarat Zaav, Z-Explorer. The government was represented by the head of the State Committee for Industry, Energy and Subsoil Use Jyrgalbek Sagymbaev, the head of the State Property Fund Zhyldyzbek Isakulov, the chairman of the National Energy Holding Aitmamat Nazarov, the director of the Department of Economic Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ermek Omuraliev. According to representatives of government agencies, the situation in the country has stabilized and the ongoing political processes have returned to the constitutional field. Mining companies reported on the sector's problems, and government officials expressed their readiness to assist the business community. In particular, Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbayev suggested that the republic's leadership create an Operational Headquarters to protect business and foreign investors, as well as provide for a number of other urgent measures to quickly restore the activities of mining enterprises. The meeting participants decided to form a package of proposals, submit it to the government, as well as continue the dialogue platform. | casual47
17/10/2020 13:15 | A bit difficult to add here until the situation is clearer. The acid test will be the election and period shortly thereafter. If we don’t get populist nationalisation of assets then great, otherwise it is likely that the market will write down the value of the Kyrgyzstan assets even if the company doesn’t. | jc2706
17/10/2020 11:22 | Fingers crossed. They will be holding presidential elections, I've read it's to be in January 2021, and a do-over of the elections maybe at the same time to save money. So stability may be a bit premature, but if things are sufficiently "rigged" by Japarov then sure, it should be stable. He has been making some positive noises e.g. about Kumtor, although what he actually said was that it's now pointless to nationalise Kumtor as there's hardly any gold left, so it was more of a "they should have done it 10 years ago" kind of thing. The mobs that got him into this position may want something in return. He may be a reformed character, having spent time in jail to contemplate life and the universe, but the only reason he is in power now, having assumed the powers of both PM and president, something unprecedented in Kyrgyzstan as they are offices which their constitution is specifically trying to separate, is because of the violence of his supporters, so that's not a good start. | casual47
17/10/2020 10:06 | Just got a very quick and encouraging reply to an email sent this morning to Artem : Hi Pabs, Thank you for your concern. The situation in the country is actually stabilising. The new acting President is keen to project stability and he has backing of Russia, so we believe that things are improving. It is safe now to be in the streets, the chaos of the first days of trouble is over. Our people and our assets in the country were not affected. We are proud of our “local” approach which means that our security guards are hired from the local villages and that prevented looting. It is very unlikely that new Acting President will push for nationalisation, as he has grown up from old times and no longer in the opposition. He just made his first big speech yesterday and said all the right things. Thus, the funding should come as planned. Best, Artem Artem Volynets Chief Executive Officer | 2pablo

At the same time, the Kyrgyz side confirms its commitment to maintaining continuity in the development of friendly relations with its foreign partners, protection of the rights of investors and ensuring the safety of foreign citizens in Kyrgyzstan,» the statement says." 16/10/2020 09:27 | This is my worry if Japarov stays in power: 1. It will destroy Kyrgyzstan's reputation as being the only democracy in Central Asia. He is already talking of changing the electoral law. 2. He is ultra-nationalist. His populism boils down to just one subject: Share the gold wealth of the country among Kyrgyz citizens, not foreigners. 3. Any agreements made with foreign investors during his reign could be regarded as suspect whenever revolution #4 happens. This is how Centerra ended up in the mire. | casual47
16/10/2020 07:44 | This is very concerning and I agree with Casual not very good businesses here. I am quite relieved I (luckily) managed to disperse around 75% of my holding in the high 30's price range. | fishhead1
15/10/2020 19:03 | Kyrgyz Republic: Statement by the High Representative/Vice- Brussels, 15/10/2020 - 19:31, Statements by the HR/VP The European Union takes note of the resignation earlier today of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sooronbay Jeenbekov, after the recent invalidation of the parliamentary elections in the country. It is vital that the President’s powers and competences are exercised within the legal framework of the Kyrgyz constitution, respecting the Kyrgyz Republic’s international commitments, including the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms. The reported transfer of presidential powers by the Speaker to the Prime Minister, Sadyr Japarov, raises serious questions in this regard. The Kyrgyz Republic is a parliamentary democracy, and the division of powers therein should be respected and preserved. The European Union is engaged, in particular through its EU Special Representative for Central Asia and its EU Delegation to the Kyrgyz Republic, in contacts with all political forces in the country, as well as the wider international community. I call on all political forces in the Kyrgyz Republic to engage in a constructive and inclusive dialogue, with the full involvement of civil society and having firmly in mind the legitimate demands of the Kyrgyz people, paving the way for new, free and fair parliamentary and presidential elections in line with international standards and under the OSCE/ODIHR’s observation. The Kyrgyz Republic's democratic path has brought stability, economic growth and significant opportunities and benefits directly to Kyrgyz citizens. It is in that context that the EU and the Kyrgyz Republic concluded an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement in 2019, while the EU also grants unilateral trade preferences to the country. The European Union fully supports the Kyrgyz Republic’s democratic progress, and has confidence that it will be safeguarded in the days and weeks ahead. | casual47

15/10/2020 14:44 | And there you have it - just as I posted not so long ago: The new PM has declared himself president..... Prime Minister Sadyr Japarov declared himself and. about. the president 20:33, October 15, 2020, Bishkek - 24.kg, Aida DZHUMASHOVA Supporters of Prime Minister Sadyr Japarov have gathered on the Old Square in Bishkek. The head of the Cabinet of Ministers came to the protesters and announced that he was now acting President of Kyrgyzstan. “Dear, I congratulate you on your victory. Everything fell into place today. The ex-president resigned, the speaker of parliament Kanat Isaev did not begin to fulfill his duties. Now the responsibilities of the president and prime minister have passed to me. I thank you for your trust, ”Sadyr Zhaparov said. He urged the audience to disperse. Let us remind you that Sooronbai Jeenbekov resigned. According to the Constitution, the acting head of state becomes the speaker of the parliament, Kanat Isaev. The latter refused to act as president. And about. The head of state will be Prime Minister Sadyr Japarov. | casual47
15/10/2020 14:38 | A lot of politicians in Kyrgyzstan end up in prison on trumped up charges so it's hard to say what he's truly guilty of but what seems clear is that the only way he has managed to become prime minister during the recent upheaval is because the protesters supporting him used mob violence. His supporters are currently violently protesting for the dissolution of parliament. Not sure where Russia is in this. I hope they still have a measure of control. If the president resigning etc is happening *despite* Russian pressure and the withholding of financial aid then perhaps that's a sign that Kyrgyzstan could be on a wild ride. | casual47

15/10/2020 11:48 | The Kyrgyz president bites the dust, resigned earlier today. Looks like he may have lost support from Putin, given Russia's withdrawal of financial support. I wonder if the new PM will now be put forward as new president. The "revolution" has been hijacked by thuggish mobs and the dark money that's paying for mobilising them (literally bussing them into the capital to protest). The peaceful protesters who took to the streets in the hope for modernisation seem to have been sidelined. But....still early days. | casual47
15/10/2020 11:23 | Compared with Trump, Biden and family are angels! Trump and family are as dirty as dirt can be. Should he lose he is going to be tied up in court cases for the rest of his life. | jc2706

14/10/2020 19:17 | Looks like the political stalemate in Kyrgyzstan may quickly resolve itself: Russia have announced they suspended all financial support to Kyrgyzstan until things get back to normal. Not sure who they are trying to help, the new PM or the old president. | casual47 |
