Good News... another step out of internal R&D into Partnership/Commercial development & deployment work. Nothing like serious Government Department backing to help cross the chasm from great idea to great & hopefully widespread application of that idea.

This announcement contains inside information

CERES POWER AND CUMMINS WIN US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY AWARD TO DEVELOP FUEL CELL POWER SYSTEMS FOR DATA CENTRES

COLLABORATION FOCUSED ON DELIVERING SIGNiFICANT COST SAVINGS AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVeMENts

Ceres Power Holdings plc (AIM:CWR) is pleased to announce its key development role in a recently selected US Department of Energy ("DOE") programme awarded to Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) ("Cummins"). Ceres Power will benefit from up to US$2.6m of the total US$4.9m project, which includes contributions from Cummins, US DOE and other parties, subject to final contract.

Ceres Power and Cummins will develop a novel 5kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell ("SOFC") modular system targeting high electrical efficiency (60 percent) and scalable to meet multiple distributed power applications up to 100kW. The initial target application will be the data centre market; however, wider applicability to other markets such as commercial combined heat and power will also be considered. Ceres Power's unique Steel Cell offers greatly enhanced robustness to real-world operating conditions at a lower cost than conventional SOFC designs, as well as being fuel flexible, highly efficient and with lower emissions.

If successfully implemented into data centres, the Steel Cell will enable data centre operators to cut current overall costs by more than 20 percent and reduce their carbon footprint by up to 49 percent. It has the potential to reduce world energy use significantly as data centres currently consume nearly two percent of the world's electrical power.

The award is under the US DOE Funding Opportunity Announcement DE-FOA-0001469 titled "Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Innovative Concepts and Core Technology." Ceres Power and Cummins will work closely with its consortium partners, University of Connecticut ("UConn") and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory ("PNNL"), one of the US DOE's national laboratories, to test the system to validate its feasibility in the target applications.

Phil Caldwell, Ceres Power's Chief Executive Officer said:

"This is a very exciting opportunity for Ceres Power to work with Cummins and the US DOE to address the rapidly growing market for cleaner distributed power for data centres and other commercial applications and strengthens our relationships in North America, a key market for our Steel Cell technology"

Wayne Eckerle, Cummins VP - Corporate Research and Technology said:

"We are looking forward to working with Ceres Power, UConn, and PNNL to develop and ultimately commercialize this technology that can reduce costs for data centers and other potential customers while helping improve our environment. This is another example of technological collaboration that is a win for our companies, a win for our customers and a win for the environment.

Thanks for posting that jambo192.
One complication that CWR has avoided is that it is not involved in EU funding which may complicate things for ITM if as and when we finally leave the EU
Not sure how much we have learnt since March statement but v good to know that Nissan prepared to be named so it must be serious.
Never heard of M-Solv details here-www.m-solv.com

I'm sure I've held some Shares in Ceres since as far back as about 2007 !!!
That'll make 10 years next year... yikes !!
Sensing I may need to take a 3rd punt at these, should a nice opportunity to average down present itself from this Summer onwards.

I think the dots are starting to join up for fuel cells. If they are used to produce hydrogen at point of use, using off peak electricity, then the efficiencies and economics start to look sensible. We produce 25% of our power from renewable sources and power companies are presently offering heavy incentives for customers to use of peak power. The percentage of our power produced from renewable sources is set to rise. I dont think it matters if you need to use a lot of power to, say, manufacture and compress hydrogen if it doesn't cost much to do and the power used has been produced in a sustainable fashion. In fact it could be viewed as a great way to store otherwise unusable power. Fuel cells are now becoming cheaper to produce using freely available materials, can operate at lower temperatures meaning fewer complicated ancillaries, are being demonstrated to be durable and reliable. Still a bit of a way to go but I think fuel cells are beginning to stick their noses in front of battery based power. My understanding is that batteries take a lot of energy and rare earth minerals to manfacture, and don't last through enough charging cycles .

Given all of that I agree we are coming to a crunch tine for Ceres. It's a bit of a race for real and rapid commercialisation over the next four years or so and Ceres needs income before the cash runs out. I think we may go through a cycle of contract wins and rights issues before we get real financial traction but this has the potential to be the ground floor of something exciting. Alternatively of course, the bills could mount up before the income arrives in which case - trouble! It's a risk but a very interesting one in my view.

Lurking around the 9p mark for some weeks now.
I note the 1/2 year Report published in late Feb was for the period ending Dec2015.
We've had a little interesting News shortly afterwards.
With the 1/2 year approaching again in about 6 weeks, could this be make or break time ?
Is this going to be the all-time high of recent years OR will we finally move out of R&D and into some sort of commercial Production with a number of paying Customers ?

There is a lot of competition out there. Hopefully the low cost steel and ceramic "printing" with all monies ploughed back into R&D will do it.

Would Amber Rudd be visiting a no hope company. I doubt it.

Dreaming of an ARM type company here with revenues coming in from all over the world. Well why not.

Fingers crossed for that first production deal.

smokey.
The previous old Milan exhibition report that I cut and pasted on this site has since been edited and the fuel cell bit has been replaced. Someone at KDN must follow these posts closely. There is now no trace that I can now find of the words 'fuel cell'that I read last tweek.

I have just phoned KD Navien Sales at Chertsey and drawn a friendly 'blank'. The technical boys are out. Would I like them to call me back, they are doing a road show?. Yes,please, I said.. The Road Show comes to Merton next month (Western merchants I think they said) in Western Road.

That's very near my home so I will go along and see if i can get any hint of a UK launch. Until then that's all I can do until the CWR AGM in mid September, which I have attended twice. It has always been very investor friendly.

my post 5517 was a straight cut and paste from the KD Navien web site.

I agree that it seems to be an oxymoron, contradicting itself. In black and white it refers to a fuel cell m-CHP as I have already stated in 55119. I intended to phone them to ask for an explanation but ran out of time today and now can't do that until Thursday.

Also note that GM's tech boys refer to Gen 2 stacks as being ferritic steel.

GM and Honda JV announced a few days after CWR's extended Honda deal.

That would be one big license fee.

Interesting to follow the video after clicking on the "experience the clarity fuel cell" button. Under the hood the Fuel stack looks vaguely familiar.

Autocar discussed this in Oct 2015.

KD Navien describe it as a" fuel cell driven m-CHP" on their own web site.
A real oxymoron then?
