European stocks set to open higher as investors await crucial Fed meeting
Published 8 min ago
Elliot Smith
@ElliotSmithCNBC

Key Points

Investors will be anticipating the Fed meeting amid expectations that the U.S. central bank could be cutting interest rates soon.
In the U.K., Conservative party candidates to replace British Prime Minister Theresa May, in a live TV debate on Sunday, took aim at favorite Boris Johnson over his promise to take Britain out of the European Union with or without a deal on October 31.

European stocks are set to open higher Monday as investors await this week’s crucial U.S. Federal Reserve meeting.

The FTSE 100 is seen up around 24 points at 7,370, while the DAX is expected to open 24 points higher at 12,120. France’s CAC 40 is set to nudge 7 points higher to 5,375, according to IG data.

"Level of debt" show me a company if the FTSE that doesn't!!What you fail to realise is that the debt to equity ratios have got out of kilter for most companies trading on 100 and 250.Look around DD and see what's going on elsewhere. We are not alone by any means !!!Centrica would be "hands down the back of the sofa money" for Shell.

BUT WHICH FOREIGN WOULD BE DISBARRED FROM BUYING CENTRICA TODAY

OLIVER SHAH
May 26 2019, 12:01am, The Sunday Times
Who might be bold enough to buy Centrica?

Oliver Shah

Two years before the financial crisis and a decade before Brexit, 2006 was a different time. When an apparatchik at Gazprom said an acquisition of Centrica was “being analysed and examined” by the Russian state energy giant — sending the British Gas owner’s shares 25% higher — Tony Blair’s government indicated that it would not stand in the way. With a glibness redolent of the era, then trade and industry secretary Alan Johnson remarked: “Whatever the difficulties and challenges of globalisation, the answers will not be found in the stagnant waters of protectionism.”

Come on over, comrades.

A takeover of Britain’s former energy monopoly by the Russians or Chinese would be unthinkable today — but would a takeover in itself be out of the question?

The business models for the larger suppliers are failing, Shell know that, they may contemplate taking home energy at some point and turning it around but CNA in its entirety, with its current level of debt and earnings, not in a million years IMO.SSE is looking more likely..........once it's set up as a separate business entity (next year I believe) it will be interesting to see what happens then.

In fact I can see a whole host of FTSE companies that could be taken over but if this were to happen the MP's will be up in arms about British companies going to foreign predators when it was the MP's that caused all the trouble in the first place !!!!Muppets the lot of them !!

The fact Shell actually bought First Utility at a time when Corbyn was in the driving seat sent a message out that they (Shell) didn’t regard nationalisation as a real threat. Now the threat of nationalisation has diminished then a bid is a real possibility. First Utilities was just a mere £200m “dipping the toe” exercise onto biggest things.

IMHO

Cheers nortic, good points

lol, that begs the question, how much for centrica and would they really wish or be allowed to buy

Completely agree, but you are wasting your time, stalkers are filtered and best ignored, they offer absolutely nothing, just very sad individuals.

I accidentally clicked on an older CNA thread and found it quite amusing in as much as people's mindsets never seem to change when a share price is at long term lows - the following is from a poster called Slinger and from 17 years ago after the price had fallen from £2+ to £1.50. How times DONT CHANGE!."Centrica is the uks biggest gas supplier and is branching out in North America. The markets probably feel that they are over stretching themselves and thats why the price has fallen.Centrica vigourously defended itself last week when rumours of accounting problems clobbered the price and they started to recover only to get hammered again yesterday. There was no dcb today, but if Lattice can merge with NGG then Centrica has to be a suitable partner for a foreign company.Didnt RWE snaffle innogy.I agree with the post about a possible takeover situation materialising, especially if the price goes much lower.Remember the winter is just around the corner and we havent had the best of summers,so all our summer bills will be larger than normal.I used to work for this company and know of no reason for the massive drop.Friends who still work there are more than bullish about the future,so this one will do for me."

Grupo,

I'll tell you a story about the law of averages, i had a friend that lived in Vegas and he was walking up the strip and looked into a casino he could see a big build up around a roulette table, he walked up to it and was told it had hit black about 9 times and most people were betting on red, it kept on hitting black and so more and more were betting higher on Red. The roulette table eventually hit black 47 times.

I am very confident that the takeover bid will come from Shell Energy.

would you know how big the share of the maket would be if shell engery and centrica
merged

also if such a merger would be queried by uk compettion authorities

have a nice day

sunny here after the violent storms
