Fair play to Conn for his realistic approach/outlook & he acknowledged the poor share performance, refreshing that the shareholders got a mention, I’m happy holding, it’s a no brainier with the dividend yield, 8% compared to 1% on my savings, still higher than Barclays, hopefully get a strong finish this afternoon.GLA

Portside, surprised your water meter was installed indoors. When Thames came to do our street they removed all the old taps in the street and replaced the units with new taps and meters installed in the street. No reason to enter the house at all??

Conn saying the customers lost were very low margin and cost them hardly anything in profit.

Whatsup, true, forgot about the cost to the customer. Benefits the Company because they no longer have to pay the staff to take the readings, waste customers times like you say and benefit by not having to foot the bill themselves.

One reason to be a share holder. Take back your costs as long as the company does well. ;)

Capeview,

I’m with EDF and have not had a smart meter fitted either. Mainly because I think the first bunch will have bugs to sort out , second I can’t be asked as I like you give readings online and thirdly the company had made three appointments which they failed to keep.

Can we point this out as well. It’s the customer paying for this in their increased bills

Yump, that's how I feel sometimes in our house. Kids turning every single light on but find it hard to turn them off, think it's water sports when running the taps and my little girl not quite a teenager yet, having a swimming marathon in the shower.

Cutting back investment seems fair enough - its a business after all, not some sort of charity that has the national interest at heart. As long as they can conduct the business they need to with the resources they've got. <<---

Just wish the Government and Councils would think the same thing when it comes to running the Country. Not just wasting the funds they have because they fear they won't have it again next year.

andyj, Just hope there is and this isn't just a blip that people will profit from big time, because it's a nice 15p or so from the year low which would make a nice profit, and then the shares drop back again.

If that happens, it could well be the next results we would have to wait for to see if anything Centrica are attempting to do pays off and we get even better results.

Unless of course Centrica becomes the target of a takeover, which could actually be good for all.

Would you invest money when the government on both sides say they are going to nationalise.

I think they will have enough on their plate what with Brexit.

"As far as customers watching their smart meters to save money. I don’t see hat happening at all. It’s like buying a new bike on B.B. you enjoy ridin it or a week then it becomes another toy."

Exactly what's happened in our house. Giving people the feeling of control is the thing - most will take no action at all.

I spend most of my energy-saving time going around shouting 'turn the bloody lights off' and sneakily turning the thermostat down when the women of the house have it on 35C.

On a side line . These smart meters will I think be good for Centrica. It will save the cost of manually going and knocking on doors to read a meter . 5 out of 10 people won’t even be in.

I agree on the watching Smart Meter thing being like anything else after a while. It will have novelty to begin with then people will lose interest, unless of course its something you really want.

As for Smart Meters good for Centrica, it could be if it means they don't have to send out people because of how big they are, meaning a lot of saved money on wasted time and a job that really doesn't need to be done anymore.
However, for the last 4-5 years that I have been a part of First Utility and now Octopus Energy, I have no smart meter and just once a month give a meter reading. Never had anyone come out and take a reading other than when I left the previous company before FU needing to confirm readings.
Based on my House and the readings I give the company uses whatever methods to keep tabs on the reading in one reading doesn't go through which has happened from time to time but there Estimated read is only a few off what my meter actually is without Smart Meter.

The only thing I see Smart Meters doing across the board is a lack of false readings being given so the companies get there correct money but also the customer pays the correct bill as long as the Smart Meter works properly, doesn't give a completely false reading meaning customers paying over the odds and it can't be hacked.

Also, how do we know how accurate these Meters really are. As customers we need more detail to see if what we are actually using correlates to the appliances we have installed and are using.

Looks like investing in customers in this case means getting rid of the unprofitable ones. Which is very different from 'investing in customers' - as in cutting prices to scramble for market share - which is what some of the supermarkets have done.

Government were more then happy to accept bids from Carillion (employing no doubt zero hours staff) that were below cost . What happened they all lost their jobs.

I’ll take stream lined companies that make a profit any day
