Scemer - why not use the numbers released today? The net debt of £2.8bn is entirely paid off, leaving only a £0.5bn pension deficit.

Looking at last years numbers they could pay off all pension liabilities plus some debt to leave themselves with around £1 billion of debt. Good use of the silverware

Fact of the matter is that the sum of the parts are likely worth more than the whole, be better if the company was broken up!

But how much potential revenue and profit is now possible with just their UK and Irish businesses. If you look back at the last 5 years, the Centrica story has been one of disposal after disposal. Renewables, exploration, Direct Energy, Storage etc. Will the connected homes (IOT) bit be next?

Good news for holders, similar to Pennon that a disposal wipes out debt and leaves a leaner fitter uk business. Main ongoing issue now is likelihood of furTher write downs in nuclear and oil exploration or has this already been kitchen sinked? I doubt they can find a buyer Willing to py a decent price even in 2021?

Market ought to applaud their action, debt was too high, and they are becoming a more focused company, even if Direct was a strong asset. It was either pull out of Uk or cut some of the subsidiaries.

British Gas owner Centrica to sell US business for £3bn

Edward Thicknesse

Centrica has today announced that it will sell US subsidiary Direct Energy for £2.8bn as it attempts to restructure after a brutal couple of years for the British Gas owner.

The move comes as the former FTSE blue chip attempts to restructure its business, with plans to cut 5,000 jobs.

More to follow.
