With Jaguar/Landrover (Solihull plant) increasing shifts and o/t in the last month, JCB taking on ex-staff and paying workers a bonus it would seem all is not too dire in the automotive industry..

Bank of England has announced a probable round of QE3(Devaluation of Sterling) which, although inflationary to consumers, should help CSG and the rest of our manufacturing base..

I paid a visit to a company who machine various types of castings today. Order book is the best for years, starting a night shift to keep up with demand. Pity they are not listed, but it looks as though business is still good in this sector.

John McClure is the manager of the Unicorn UK Income fund. It tops the UK equity income sector over one, three and five years. McClure specialises in small and medium-sized higher-income companies, helping him to boost performance over the long term.

Buy: Castings (CGS)

"This is a manufacturer of parts for the international automotive market. Its two main clients are truckmaker Scania and carmaker Volvo. This means that it's exposed to the fast-growing markets of Russia, Eastern Europe and Brazil. Even US truck sales are showing a huge increase in sales volumes.

"Lots of people think that Castings is all to do with British truck sales, but this is not quite right.

"It has a market capitalisation of around £120 million. Part of our differentiation as an equity income manager is that we are willing to go into smaller companies. We only have around 4% of the fund in the FTSE 100. We find that there are plenty of opportunities within smaller companies.

Outlook

Despite various adverse reports, our customers are forecasting stable or increased demands and if these forecasts are converted to sales we will enjoy further growth in the company and our investments in both foundry production and machining capacity will improve returns.

Yep ! Great stuff - not least the news on the dividend - but will get the usual meagre coverage as it is a well managed, world class. Midlands-based metals basher turning out high quality capital goods, many for export - just the sort of thing the media don't like !

I, on the other hand................!!!

"Dividend
...We hope the shareholders support our view on cash management".

Well this one certainly does - I think they've done a superb job during a difficult trading period.

killick in good form at the moment..they were pushing hampson last week at 23...31 bid today..in fact they have been very keen on titan europe since 30p in spring of last year. i checked today and they think it will be 200p by year-end...a highly geared version of castings

Wow ! See what you mean. Must have been around 45 if it was 10th December; almost doubled by mid Jan and then fell 51 in a day in mid Feb and is now around the 14 mark.

I had a quick scan - RNVO has been a disaster but not sure what price it was when they tipped it. Rest of them done pretty well from what I can see

Interesting : CGS is the only one of those ten that I hold. Must check on how the others have done when I have a few minutes.

Thanks Bluebelle. It was MoneyWeek that prompted me to take a closer look at CGS in this piece in Dec-10, and put some in my ISA:

This did look like a big move was due.
Lots of net cash on the balance sheet, deduct that to get
a more accurate PER imv.

On 2012 estimates, allowing for the net cash, may still be cheap imo.

I purchased some of these for my SIPP. I paid a visit to a compny a few months ago at Bordesley Hall, not far from the M42. The hall and site, I believe, are owned by CGS and there are about 30 plus companies on the site in the hall, offices and factory units. I should imagine that it is a nice little earner for CGS.

Are we finally going to see a breakout now? Still no volume to speak of though, and may remain the case during the 'news blackout' until results issued in June.
