Strangely, the only thing wrong with the idea is public perception. As an engineering solution it's pretty well perfect (this is with tried and tested fission, not fusion). Also there'd be some cheap cabins for those in the vicinity of the reactors.

Some thought would have to go into disposal - I'm not advocating the method used by the Lenin icebreaker which we saw recently and which simply sailed into the sea and dumped the reactor overboard when they replace it.

Carnival's nuclear fleet ; has a certain ring to it. Only need to wait a millennium for fusion .

A couple of small nuclear reactors could do the job, but as for windmills and batteries.....

Not sure that batteries will take a cruise liner very far ,the power to wt ratio is tiny compared with fuels - though sailing ships might make a comeback.

If fossil fuel usage becomes material, you can be certain that capital will be deployed to mitigate the problem - battery and wind power for example.

Or if you prefer capitalism will find a way to mitigate the problem using battery and wind power for example :)

Toffeeman, another question is should we invest in an industry that uses huge amounts of fossil fuels ploughing around the globe purely for entertainment?

I realise that this is not a popular question but it highlights the disconnect between our global warming posturing and global warming actions. Truth is that whilst we are willing to recycle a few beer cans (or Bolly) , most of us are unwilling to sacrifice our current pleasures for a future generation.

Aside the moral issues , is it a wise investment ? At some point the industry will come under pressure to abandon this model. Probably not soon , other than some token changes, so we are probably safe for a while....

I said in post 1323 in June last year that Carnival wasn't being run well and that the share price was suffering. Since then it's dropped nearly 30%: if it doesn't recover to better than £37 by end August, anyone holding will be well advised to debark before it seeks to go further underwater (and don't wait if it drops below £35 before August ends).

If you look at the cruise industry it's highly concentrated and Carnival is the dominant player.

So ask:

Will the holiday and leisure industry grow?

Is the population getting older?

Are older people becoming wealthier?

Are cruises a good way to see lots of places without expending lots of energy packing and repacking?

Are families a growing target for cruise companies?

Are the middle classes in emerging markets a growing sector?

Is the demand for cruises going to grow?

Should you invest in a company with a strong market position in a growing market?

At least with questor you know the person and his expertise, and so his musings can be read with that knowledge. Afaics, Seeking alpha is a motley fool type website where selected amateur bloggers can have a platform, so I'll judge it in that regard, i.e a bit like an advfn post (on steroids).

Questor: although the shares are under water there is no need to abandon ship at Carnival

Questor share tip: the cruise operator’s strategic position remains strong and the stock looks cheap after the slide in the share price

I meant the sell price, however that buy price looks reasonable.

I didn't sell knowing that the share price was going to rise higher ; took about 50% profit I recall.
Or do you mean the logic behind the buy today on a post-results dip?

I sold out here a bit early at 4320 when the share price was rising , but decided to buy back today at 3390.

I wouldn't worry about it, I've seen the occasional similar mistake but it will be a one off. Cunard always learn and do not repeat a mistake.
