ALL cruise ships should start or be fully prepared by April. The main problem is getting staff back as they are dispersed around the world or been laid off and need to be re-employed. Big gap to fill when £14 breaks and hold. £25 on the ships radar.

I looked today to book transatlantic crossing with Cunard for summer and couldn’t find any rooms apart from internal cabins. Suspect there is a lot of demand building up. Vaccines will be the key and the over 70s will be the first to be offered one so don’t think insurance will be an issue.

Just been looking at booking a cruise and found this statement on Holiday extra's web site.
Please be aware that the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised that British nationals aged 70 and over, and those with underlying health conditions like chronic diseases and diabetes, are advised not to travel on cruise ships. If you travel against the advice of the FCO your policy will be invalid.
Therefore people in that position can not get cover for a future cruise at this moment.

30th November - Moderna and Pfizer vaccine awaiting green light within days

Moderna is filing for US and European emergency regulatory approval of its coronavirus vaccine so that it can be recommended for widespread use.

Regulators will look at trial data for the mRNA vaccine and decide if it is safe and effective enough to recommend for roll out.

Clinical studies show the jab is more than 94% effective at protecting people from becoming ill with Covid-19.

Pfizer, which has a similar jab, has already filed for the same US approval.

From Cruise Critic

(12:01 a.m. GMT) -- In a huge boost for the cruise industry in the UK, Southampton is set to get a £55m new cruise terminal in a joint venture between MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Associated British Ports (ABP).
The fifth terminal, which is due to open in June 2021, is at the forefront of green technology with roof-mounted solar panels and shore side connectivity allowing ships to plug into electricity when they dock, meaning they can turn off their engines.
The terminal will have capacity for 6,000 passengers and is currently being built at Dock 10, which is in the Western Docks near City and Mayflower terminals, and walkable from Southampton railway station. Further details in terms of features will be released by ABP in January.

BREAKING NEWS 28/11/2020
FINANCIAL TIMES
UK set to approve Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine within days

The vaccine, developed by BioNTech and Pfizer, could be delivered within hours of the authorisation, Whitehall insiders told the Financial Times.

Officials close to the process said the first injections could take place from December 7. The UK has so far ordered 40 million doses of the two-shot vaccine.

Hugely significant news - vaccinate the over 80's first and deaths/hospitalisations will fall by more than half.

Government asks MHRA to assess Oxford vaccine for approval.
The government has asked the regulator to assess the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, bringing the UK a step closer to a possible rollout.

The referral to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) marked "a significant first step" in getting the vaccine "approved for deployment", the government said.

It follows news that the jab was "highly effective" in advanced trials.

The UK government has pre-ordered 100m doses of the Oxford vaccine.

The government's latest request to the MHRA comes a week after the regulator was asked to assess the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

A few very practical, very seriously asked questions;

what will happen when one single case of Covid is identified on a cruise ship? Not just local on board behaviour & rules developed from Noro Virus experience but also ports declining berths; the next weeks passengers; departees and their luggage; excursions; incoming crew etc.

Cruising income is built heavily on US participation. Which country in the world has virtually uncontrolled Covid raging across much of its population with the less well off sectors (that coincidentally supply cruise ship staff) suffering particularly badly? Who wants to share a boat with a cohort of US passengers?

The cost of daily testing will be a significant change to the TOM. Where is that calculated in the forecasts?

Who will be queuing to travel on the Carnival Horizon now they know (thanks to Justice above) that it has berthed in the US to pick up crew?

Unsinkable: The Cruise Industry Is Coming Back To Life
Ship Captains, start your engines! After a miserable 2020, the global cruise machine is slowly coming back to life, buoyed by positive news on the vaccine front. While there are hurdles yet to overcome, there’s a sense of optimism that hasn’t been felt since the industry was essentially shut down in March.

The Carnival Horizon returned to Miami early Monday morning to prepare for its return to service. Completed in 2017, the 3,960-passenger Horizon is the first Carnival Cruise Line vessel scheduled to return to sailing under new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last month, we reported that Carnival Horizon was in St. Maarten welcoming crew back to the ship.

The UK reportedly has a ’50/50 chance’ of being the first country in the world to approve a coronavirus vaccine.

A decision could come as early as next week and the AstraZeneca and Oxford University jab could be the first in line to be awarded a licence to start offering vaccinations. A Government source told The Sun it is ‘very likely’ Pfizer and BioNTech will be the first approved vaccine, but ‘it’s looking pretty close’ and there’s a ’50/50 chance’ the UK will get there first. Ministers are reportedly being prepped to launch a TV and radio campaign to encourage Brits to get the injection as early as next week.

Good question flyfisher

Taken from the Motley fool board as they explain it more succinctly than most....

The stock tickered CCL is a member of the S&P 500 index, so any index funds tied to the S&P 500 have to own shares of that stock. Meanwhile, the stock tickered CUK tracks the price of the London-listed shares that are included in the U.K.'s premier FTSE 100 index. When the U.S. stock market overall looks more attractive than the U.K. market, then CCL shares will fetch a higher price. When the U.K. market is in favor, then CUK shares can take their turn in the lead.

Take the cheaper choice
Both Carnival stocks share the same risks and could see the same rewards. If the cruise-ship operator runs out of available capital before it can resume operations, then shareholders of both stocks would likely fare poorly in a bankruptcy or insolvency proceeding. If Carnival can outlast the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, then both stocks will likely soar in tandem.

If Carnival looks attractive to you as a value investment, then the stock tickered CUK offers a modest but meaningful discount to the stock tickered CCL. In the coming months, there's no guarantee that discount won't widen. If you're planning to hold the stock for the long haul, though, choosing the cheaper option should give you a small incremental benefit eventually.
