Poor Graham, still after all that, can't get his head around the fact that supercapacitors are just high performance capacitors. Poor mite.

Indeed there are rectification circuits Loafing, and they use, guess what (for Graham's benefit) capacitors to act as voltage smoothers, and also in the filtering circuits to remove any stray frequencies that break through.

Regen braking systems are basically the same principle and require similar electronics, but need higher performing components (inc capacitors, sorry supercapacitors there I go again), because of the high power bursts - it takes a lot of power to stop a ton and a half travelling at 70mph!

Graham - filtered. As Maurice says , you are making a proper fool of yourself.

AC generated has to be "rectified" into a direct current DC. Car alternators have a pack of diodes built in to serve as a rectifier and convert the AC to DC.

lol I need to get on and do some work, but its been an interesting conversation and much batter than just saying the price will hit 50p or 5p like most do on these boards.

PS they don't use supercapacitors but maybe capacitors, did I tell you that Cap-xx don't manufacture capacitors only supercapacitors.

Ok, so no we're finished with regenerative braking 101 and the requirement for capacitors within the system, wait sorry "supercapacitors", can we move on to the relative merits of the stock?

No idea you tell me.

Let me post this before you answer though.

And what do we use to convert it??????

Lets go back to Wikipedia...

"Supercapacitors are used in applications requiring many rapid charge/discharge cycles, rather than long-term compact energy storage — in automobiles, buses, trains, cranes and elevators, where they are used for regenerative braking"

remembering, that:

A supercapacitor (SC), also called an ultracapacitor, is a high-capacity capacitor

Ok so you convert it then goes into the battery.
grahamwales

14:46
Nope. You can't charge a battery with AC.
mauricemonkey
12/2/2021
14:46
Wow so we agree on that at least then. The energy produced goes straight into the battery agree?

When you turn a motor into a generator it creates a braking effect. How do you think one pedal electric cars work?
mauricemonkey

So does this generator/motor also act as a regen braking system?.

That was a question by the way.

What the f are you on about now. The motor is the generator. Generators generate AC. Give up son. You're embarrassing yourself.

By way of rotating machine i take it you mean the motor lol. Ok goes through the motor then into the battery.
grahamwales

No, it doesn't go straight into the battery. For a starters the electric current is generated by a rotating machine, which means it's AC..

And there, son, is your problem. You know f all about electronics.

Maurice.

Ok so do they make capacitors and supercapacitors there is a difference you know.

What technical questions are you asking by the way.

Maurice

Yes I agree and 5 years ago said exactly the same thing, Supercapacitors would be ideal for regenerative braking however regen power goes straight back into the battery always have done even on the hybrid Mitsibushi I had.

No they make capacitors.

Your argument is like saying Maclaren don't make cars, they make supercars.

I note you keep ducking the technical questions, and clearly haven't even looked at the wiki link.

Let's go back a level. What is "capacitance".

So do you admit that Cap-xx don't actually manufacture capacitors. Yes they manufacture supercapacitors but the two are completely different.

Maurice

Some advice mate, go look at some interviews by Anthony Kongats to tell you what they actually manufacture then come back when you have cooled down.

You clearly have no idea of what they do and have bought into.

All the best.

Go read the Wiki link.
Line 1, the very first sentence:

"A supercapacitor (SC), also called an ultracapacitor, is a high-capacity capacitor"

Now for the last time, bore off. Don't come back until you have the first clue what you're talking about.
