I am amazed that Caledonia is trading at a 19% discount. The average discount in global growth investment trusts is 10%. Given Caledonia's superior record in increasing its nav over the last ten years, its discount should be less than the average, not more.

Which one to choose? Caledonia Investments and RIT Capital Partners, are two big Investment Trusts with strong backing of wealthy families with an impressive money making pedigree over several generations. Over the last three and five years RIT, backed by one arm of the Rothschild dynasty, has outperformed handsomely Caledonia, which has the backing of the Cayzer shipping clan. Caledonia is trading on a 20.17% discount to NAV compared with RIT's 5.74%. The market clearly believes that RIT is the better bet over the long term, as opposed to the short term. Are there any dissenting voices out there?

Not as keen on NAS. A good record, but run for and by Mr Mills. He and his investment manager earn a lot and there is never a dividend. Will keep watch though as investment record is quite strong.

topvest - I dipped my toe in for the first time yesterday at £15 hence the new thread to monitor things. I like the look of the discount and more importantly the underlying portfolio (Close, BTEM, QED,...). NAS has been another recent purchase for the same two reasons. These ITs which only give a NAV once a month and have a fairly concentrated quoted portfolio offer an opportunity if one likes the underlying stocks. The share price often moves with the market but the NAV has very little correlation IMO. Loverat - Hated my time at Forest. Too small a club. Doesn't compare to my time Hillsborough. Those were the days ...

Great company this. Followed for a while on and off and very recently bought some shares. Quality company for the long term. Good time to set up a thread!

A director sold and there appears to have been a bit of a panic, however the discount is 17% now and the chart shows the uptrend is intact albeit at the lower end of the range. IMO a good point to buy.

About one third of CLDNs portfolio is unquoted and I believe was last valued in March right at the bottom of the market. Since then 3i and Electra have for example doubled in price. Assuming something similar has happened to the value of CLDNs unquoted investments we are looking at an nav of well north of £20. Presumably we will find out in November .Looks interesting but dyor !

Although a complete novice I agree with you F Hog.Other peoples opinions are just that and if we wish to search them out hopefully we are capable of doing that. A BB is where we voice opinions and share information for discussion !!! Being naive about trading is the "notification of interests of directors" issued today at 4.30pm the directors receiving remuneration in respect of employment. Sorry for being thick (ish).

jonwood I dislike such posts - no doubt you get a few pence from eaach click thro but it is against the spirit of the bb's. If you have something to say about CLDN say it. Personally I think the results are pretty good and it is a benchmark for me to try to beat.

hello I wanted to tell you about a chap I have come across who the last few times he has had an opinion on CLDN has got it right - very right and taken a lot of money out (the last time I followed what he did on this was one of the best (and simple ideas!) I have followed and I was truly rewarded) What I was going to do was paste a link to his site but rather than do that I will post a link to a web site I created and hit on the link in the middle (Sack the Tax Man) go to the site and have a look at his past results. You don't know me from adam but I can tell you that he is good at what he does and when he makes mistakes - he does not hide them http://www.webspawner.com/users/jonjwood/

RNS Number:6265E Caledonia Investments PLC 29 October 2004 Listing on the New Zealand Exchange Caledonia Investments plc ("Caledonia") announces that the New Zealand Exchange ("NZX") has approved the listing of its ordinary shares, as an overseas listed issuer, with effect from 1 November 2004. This will enable investors in New Zealand to buy and sell Caledonia's ordinary shares through NZX at a price quoted in New Zealand dollars. Caledonia's listing on the London Stock Exchange will be unaffected by the above. Commenting on the announcement, Tim Ingram, Caledonia's Chief Executive, said: "We are very pleased to have achieved a listing in New Zealand, which is a further step in our efforts to market Caledonia more actively to retail investors." Mark Weldon, CEO of the New Zealand Exchange Limited, added: "We are delighted that Caledonia has decided to list on the New Zealand Exchange, taking the total number of UK domiciled investment trusts listed in New Zealand to 15. NZX's goal is to make it simpler for New Zealanders to invest in shares. Having access to international stocks makes portfolio diversification that much easier." 29 October 2004 Enquiries: Caledonia Investments plc 020 7802 8080 Tim Ingram, Chief Executive Jonathan Cartwright, Finance Director College Hill 020 7457 2020 Tony Friend Richard Pearson Angela Spain Note to Editors CALEDONIA INVESTMENTS - PORTFOLIO BREAKDOWN AS AT 30 SEPTEMBER 2004 SECTOR/COMPANY BUSINESS % HOLDING VALUE #M %OF NET ASSETS Financial 232.7 27.1% Close Brothers Merchant Banking 12.5% 124.7 14.5% Rathbones Fund Management 11.3% 32.0 3.7% ISIS Asset Management Fund Management 6.2% 20.7 2.4% SVB Holdings Insurance 5.3% 9.0 1.1% Marketform* Insurance 26.8% 15.1 1.8% Polar Capital* Fund Management 24.6% 6.2 0.7% Oval* Insurance 34.0% 15.0 1.7% Other 10.0 1.2% Leisure & Media 147.4 17.2% Kerzner International Resort Operator 12.8% 113.4 13.2% A G Barr Soft Drinks 9.4% 13.0 1.5% Incisive Media Business Publishing 8.8% 9.8 1.1% The Sloane Club* Residential Club 100.0% 9.2 1.1% Other Investments 2.0 0.2% Property 92.7 10.8% Quintain Estates Property Holding/Development 7.0% 41.2 4.8% Edinmore* Property Trading 100% 11.6 1.4% Savills Property Agency 3.8% 9.9 1.1% Buckingham Gate* Caledonia's Head Office 100.0% 9.3 1.1% Other Investments 20.7 2.4% Industrial & Services 168.1 19.6% Paladin Resources Oil and Gas 9.4% 46.2 5.4% Offshore Logistics/Bristow Helicopter Operator 5.7% 25.7 3.0% Amber* Speciality Chemicals 100.0% 13.0 1.5% Wallem* Shipping Services 74.4% 16.4 1.9% Easybox* Self Storage 99.2% 11.9 1.4% Sterling Industries* Engineering 100.0% 10.0 1.2% Melrose Resources Oil and Gas Exploration 6.7% 15.2 1.8% Tribal Group Outsourcing Services 7.3% 9.0 1.0% Other Investments 20.7 2.4% Managed General Funds 211.0 24.6% British Empire Securities Value focused investment trust 19.7% 84.3 9.8% Aberforth Partnership Fund* LP investing in quoted smaller 25.5% 33.0 3.8% companies Polar Capital Funds* Investment Funds 15.7 1.8% Eddington Capital Fund* Investment Fund 15.8 1.9% Cobepa* Investment Fund 9.9% 22.7 2.7% Other Investments 39.5 4.6% Non-Categorised Investments 10.8 1.2% Net Current Liabilities (4.7) (0.5)% Total 858.0 100.0% *Unquoted

given that a significant number of dissident family shareholders both in and thru the 'cayzer trust' still want cldn liquidated. given also that they are advised by sir john craven who is/was probably the foremost 'financial' dealmaker in the city in the 80's and 90's. looks as though this one is going to move ahead. i fancy that we are looking at something in excess of 10-00 per share once the true value of the 'unquoted' assets are realized. then again, maybe 'close bros'[cbg] may devise a deal that suits all parties ???
