@stockvalue it's not about changing the accounting rules. And it's not me that needs educating, I am a qualified accountant (including expertise in tax) and have over 30 years experience analyzing accounts having worked for a large bank.

They use jargon which confuses even large asset managers and professionals. Jargon such as: Deployments, Commitments, Realized gains, Net Realized Gains, Unrealized Gains, Net Unrealized Gains, Portfolio Finance, Complex Strategies, Partial Resolution, Concluded cases, etc. All these terminology is causing a great deal of confusion for the "average investor".

This is the only reason MW is able to sow the seeds of doubt. They know the terminology used is confusing to most investors.

@adnan17 simplify their accounts? They are pretty simple to understand for me. Burford can't change the accounting rules just because retail investors don't understand accounting. Mabey start with a simple excel sheet and try to account like MW said Bur was doing, you will see that MW's claims are impossible. But mabey you could invent a new way of accounting.

I'm no fan of MW but I think this latest report is actually a lot more convincing than their original report. The fact is BUR's profits have collapsed in H2, which given the huge levels of investment over the past couple of years is a concern. I came to this conclusion straight after the trading update - MW haven't added anything that wasn't already apparent other than perhaps highlight to wider audience. Of course, this could just be a timing issue and lumpy profits are part of the deal - I guess we'll find out one way ot the other before too long.

I would also agree with MW's assertion that BUR seem more focused on quantity rather than quality of cases - a bit like a fund manager who tries to grow their fund as big as possible, even though this will ultimately jeopardise performance.

He's just got out of bed I see.
It'll do what it will do.

No point in keep looking in when posts turns to rubbish.
Good posts earlier on though.
Gets it in perspective.
Burfield Capital is not going to disappear over night like some stocks.
Just time is the factor.

IMO

Burford needs to really simplify their accounts in my opinion. By providing too much detail in lots of different places and using a number of "unusual" terminology has led to quite a bit of confusion. Which still hasn't been cleared up. As is clear from MW report this morning.

It's entire history of cases won and cases lost can be summarized in a few pages.

May be some validity to some of MW's comments and he's relying on readers taking his word on the figures. Trouble is he's been crying wolf a few times too many and if he was hoping his cynically timed release was going to hit the share price then he's in for a miserable Monday morning.
