WSJ: FDA to propose ban on menthol cigarettes

Nov. 9, 2018 4:24 PM ET|By: Carl Surran, SA News Editor

Altria (MO -3%) and British American Tobacco (BTI -4.2%) plunged just before the close after a WSJ article discussed a potential Food and Drug Administration ban on menthol cigarettes.

The move comes amid a crackdown on e-cigarettes and would prove a particularly big blow to BAT, whose Reynolds American subsidiary paid $25B in 2015 to acquire Lorillard Inc. and Newport, the top menthol brand in the U.S.

Menthols last year represented 55% of BAT’s U.S. cigarette sales by volume and ~20% of sales for Altria's cigarette sales, according to Cowen analyst Vivien Azer.

Hi Crunchies, if you check on Short Tracker it doesn't look like any of the fund managers have this on short although I have to admit I do find this a little surprising myself)

the FDA are really sticking the boot into BATS on their NG market, then a declining tobacco market and huge debt pile on its books. It's become a target to short the stock the trend is down

You guys need to remember, most you are collecting a 4-6% divi as well, so if anything you will make your money back in a few years at worst.

Looks like a double bottom and a retest of the lows, it should trade higher at least to £40, after that I don't know.

The stock needs to trade off earnings, which are soon. The stock is falling like the industry is dying. Something is fishy. I got out a while ago, but I am interested to know where this stock goes.

Tobacco stocks seem to be a shorters paradise at the moment BATS is in a strong down trend for a reason other than revenue

£32 is a pretty good price if the industry survives, but the way the market is pricing, this stock needs to move fast back up to £36 or something is seriously wrong.

Traditionally tobacco has gone into corrections with lowly valuations compared to other sectors. It doesn 't look that cheap anymore after a decade long tobacco bull even if it has unwound somewhat.

Has been a good week for the recovery of " value" stocks in other sectors.

Market report..

Tobacco producers - which often rise during times of market turmoil - were sat at the bottom of the FTSE 100 as positive sentiment creeps back. Imperial Brands closed down 2.3% and British American Tobacco also ended down 2.3%.
