'BAT leaving Philippines'

British American Tobacco is due to close its operations in the Philippines by the end of December amid a ‘difficult environment’ and after its failed attempt to buy into the local cigarette manufacturer Mighty Corporation, according to a story in The Manila Bulletin.

The Bulletin report said that its sources had confirmed that BAT Philippines had started winding down operations after Japan Tobacco International (JTI) acquired Mighty for P46.8 billion in September.

“JTI’s acquisition of Mighty was a really big, big let-down for BAT because they were already at an advanced stage when the Japanese came at the eleventh-hour,” an unnamed source was quoted as saying.

Think BATs - like many other companies - have given up on quarterly updates (partly because these are not mandatory now).

However, as from January 2018 BATs are introducing quarterly dividend payments.

PS to post 1147: BATS are a definite buy at any price under £50.00, IMHO. £60 within the next 12 months is certainly attainable, plus the dividends: what is there not to like?

Given the and political and economic uncertainty in the world today, that affects the (short term, certainly) success of many businesses, companies like BAT are an investor's oasis: you may not be able to just live there alone, but it provides shelter, comfort and sustenance sufficient to get on with your (investment) journey refreshed and better off. In short: buy BATS for a reliable return of both capital and income over the ongoing future. I hold a bundle! :)

Just catching-up on some of the coverage of BATS Capital Markets Day yesterday. I saw this comment in the FT and I liked it. I thought I would share it here:

By Arthashastra

"Banning and restricting is a 1920’s idea of censorship that didn’t work. The poor downstairs looked in as the lords upstairs had their fun. It is where we are going with this moribund politics. Schwarzenegger built a tent outside the San Fransisco legislature to accommodate his love for cigars and to create a “positive environment where they can all be on an equal footing, as opposed to everyone going into the governor's office where he's behind his desk."

Anything positive takes time and cultural change rather than prescription."

If one were to click on the link above and check on a year by year basis, there appears to be an interim management statement at the end of October giving a trading update to 30th September. Only one year does this appear to be missing.
