I like this bit

"combustible cigarettes pose serious health risks, and the only way to avoid these risks is not to start or to quit."

...So I shall just carry on then.

edit: IMB plus 10, BATS minus 30. Go figure.

I don't think there will be any nasties tomorrow imho.Looking at Philip Morris and its upgrade for the full year and an increase in dividend, i'm hoping for a similar outcome here.IMB surprised slightly to the upside when it reported recently and i believe there has been an uptick in the consumption of stick cigarettes with more home working and less restrictions to smoking with fewer visits to the workplace or hospitality settings like hotels restaurants and bars where smokers are treated like lepers these days.I could be totally wrong of course but there was a clearout of a lot of managers a while back so the focus is on cost-cutting and the bottom line. The battle of the NGPs be it IQOS,Vype or Blu will be of interest.IQOS does seem to have stolen a bit of a march on its competitors, and PM is holding great faith in it for growth prospects going forward. With the drop in sterling recently helping out the share price here i think the upside in any results could have already been priced in to a certain extent. We might see a 'sell the news' scenario with the results.....but i hope not.Anyway a 7%+ annual dividend is reason enough to stay in here.

results had better be good tomorrow or this purple patch will unwind pdq! however, nothing to suggest any weakness in the lead up so i'm hopeful.

The problem as I see it is the all powerful anti smoking lobby combined with the "ethical investment" lobby has seen an exit of numerous funds who cannot be seen to be holding such a toxic share in their portfolio. So we may never see those heady heights of 5000 again. But I feel that the noble tobacco plant is still much under rated, let alone the even nobler cannabis plant....exit stage left in a cloud of smoke...

There is enough information in the chart in the header to swing trade this quite satisfactorily if you are so inclined. But it certainly can move fast. I'm in holding mode average 2730, hoping for a number beginning with 3 to fill that gap from July.

I've heard this stuff about chips in vaccines.

Any such chip would have to be pretty small to get down say, a 19 gauge needle which has an internal diameter of 0.7mm.

Any silicon chip 0.5mm across will not carry with it any power source and so will be passive. The most it could do is get stuck somewhere and report information if interrogated by some either radio or induction (magnetic) signal.

It won't be radio because radio antennas are stupidly inefficient at sending or receiving signals if their dimensions are much below 1/4 of a wavelength. A wavelength 4x 0.5mm would be in the 10s of GHz area. Signals of that frequency get attenuated quite rapidly in a conductive medium and the human body is just that. So is rain.

As for inductive (magnetic) signals, they don't suffer quite so much from wavelength restrictions (it's more to do with area - how much magnetic signal they can pick up varies with the area they have) and inductive signals can therefore be quite low frequency and this will enable them to penetrate conductive mediums (you) fairly easily.

However, inductive fields have a signal that falls off as the inverse cube of distance so any device to excite them/read them has to be right on top of them - think chipped pets having a chip reader wand placed right over their necks.

Realistically all a chip could do is identify you if you were within a foot or two of an inductive reader. Obviously I'm not in favour of being chipped like a pet but I'm wondering what exactly do people think these alleged chips will be used for?

By the way, we don't need to vaccinate the whole population every year. It's a one off exercise to effectively eliminate the vaccine in the UK. Test and trace will do the rest. Most western economies will do something similar so the numbers of infected travellers are likely to be low.

Gecko, you are wrong on this. The gov and NHS agree with me which is why the plan is to vaccinate everyone. The goal ought to be elimination of the disease, as we managed with Smallpox.

Question marks over how long Covid one lasts apparently.
But who knows at the moment.
