Bid hopes lift Biffa and Shanks (I.C. Week in reveiw)

Created: 24 October 2007 Written by: Algy Hall

Shares in waste management companies Biffa and Shanks plunged during the summer as market turmoil destroyed the perceived takeover potential that had buoyed them.

However, news from the US of a private equity-backed management offer for Waste Industries USA has rekindled investors' bid hopes and sent Shanks shares 8 per cent higher on Tuesday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IC View
GoodValueThere have been some issues with Biffa's local collection business but its strong asset base makes it the most likely takeover candidate. Shanks and Biffa are good value at 264p and 256p respectively.

Agreed Ideal, you are not alone.
Robbie Burns says if you find youve bought a dog, sell it. He says most people, if they have a share thats in profit and one thats down they sell the one in profit to prove to themselves they can make a profit. However more often than not, that share continues to rise, whereas the dog continues to slide.
So i read that and promptly sold ICAP when i was just back in profit, but hung on to BIFFA, where i am currently down 12%. ICAP has risen almost every day and is up approx. 12% since i sold.
At least now BIFFA is starting to come back, but its painfully slow.
The moral of this story, patience is a virtue. Wish I had the time.

All very quiet, must be lots of people sitting with their fingers crossed!!

--------------------

Not so quiet on the BIFF thread. You might want to have a read through.

If you prefer to stay here, I will look in and post on this thread as well.
It is crucial that biff posts positive updates from here.
I have been invested since BIFF demerged from Severn Trent. I did short the shares after the poor announcements. I added to my holding with the proceeds from the short. I will hold with a long term view. I have only a few longs. I am normally short on shares but make exceptions with companies like this one which has been hit far too hard. The management appear to be sound but it might take some time for their efforts to show through. A nice dividend gives more incentive to hold.

theband, this boat we share rides some frickin choppy sea's my freind :)

I will never diss the day job again.....at least until Monday.

I only started this stock thing in March, right about the peak of the ftse, 6700. Things went well for a few months, made 15% (which included some big winners and losers). Since then, its been a disaster, lost the 15% and lost another 30% on top of that.

The banks and share mags are screaming buy or hold, while they are dumping left, right and centre. I'm learning, just slightly concerned I'll run out of cash before I've got the basics down.

From all the books I read, I understand this is a common complaint.

Still, its a damn site more focusing than paper trading!

I was listening to news early this morning. Bank of England warns that shares could fall further. I decided i would sell first thing, but something came up and i left it. How wrong can one be. I have decided i know f all and should have stuck to my day job.

we might see a finish of above 260 this week. if that were the case, it would confirm the share price is on its way to another reisistence at 280.
