This from RBC Capital Markets:

We expect the European insurance sector to outperform the market in 2019. An increase in underlying customer demand with little change in supply should increase insurers’ pricing power, leading to growing earnings.
Investors can be assured by a highly prudent solvency regime which keeps balance sheets strong and high-yielding dividends safe.
Top Picks – Aviva, Beazley, Just Group, Legal and General . Outperforms – Ageas, Direct Line, Lancashire, Munich Re, Phoenix, RSA. UK life – limited Brexit risk creates buying opportunity. The subsector has underperformed due to the uncertainty caused by Brexit, but even in a No Deal scenario, solvency and growth are only dented.
We see bulk annuities as the best structural growth opportunity in the sector — there is significant latent demand which is independent of economic growth and the prospect for large reserve releases due to slowing life expectancy.
The yields are highly attractive and dividends are extremely safe.

Not much to say!

It's only 70p off it's all time high - and they haven't yet commented on renewal rates or the upcoming half year results.

My guess is that renewal rates are looking pretty soft for everything other than cat related stuff; which isn't their major product - hence the relative weakness.

TvThe point is likely consolidation in this segment - a number of Lloyds players are in sale process as they struggle to give more than platform access and distribution ie no real scale in global insurance world so they become attractive to the global insurers looking to bolt on distribution centres Multiples of recent sales have been extraordinary

Sold 50% of mine today before the end of the tax year. Will keep the rest, but seems a tad expensive at this level. Quality company of course!

I increased my holding slightly yesterday. The pressure of the flood of capital into insurance markets from US hedge funds and US pension funds may ease a little with US monetary tightening and insurance underwriting may increase in the US over the next 18 months/2 years as the country experiences a short period of 'Trumpflation'. I can see more insurance 'than usual' being written for engineering projects and professional indemnity - whether that is already in the share price or not who knows?
