02/12/2002 20:31 | ruth - your last post after mine. Sell signals everywhere and didn't react. Over the past 4 days I'd been so keyed up for longs I didn't even think short. Bad trading! | big al 39

02/12/2002 19:45 | Missed half-days' trading today. DOW was up when I left and not it is down! 0.5% up today compared to yesterday. Profits in long UU. (+4), BP. (+1), SHEL (+2); short AAL (third time lucky +9) were eroded by loses in long SHP (-5), short AAL (-1,-2), RSA. Still unable to trade with the trend but at least I am getting better at NOT trading too much against the trend. Open positions Long CS. @32.5 (Don't think it is going anywhere in a hurry) Long REX @382 (Puzzled by its weakness. Feature of defensive stock?) Short RSA @148 (Not giving up on this one) Short AAL @921 (Strong. Likely to need quick exit tomorrow) | axdpc

02/12/2002 17:20 | TRIN thread: Just posted this on the new-ish TRIN thread: Shorter Term Usage I have found that a big move away from 1.00 seems to have some predictive value in short term trading. Here's an example from Late Nov. 2002: This shows a drop then a sharp rally, which lead to a KEY REVERSAL (and short term top?)... -The surge in TRIN on Tuesday to a closing level near 2.40 (Yahoo) was followed by a gap up on Wednesday (before the Thursday Thanksgiving holiday), some follow-thru in Friday's abbreviated trading session. -The market was well-watered for news. And there came somoe impressive Christmas sales figures (before the opening) from WMT and JPY. Overnight, the SPX and Dow surged, with SPX hitting 950+. Buyers were ready to move, and the market makers were ready to fleece them, knowing that the opening gap would hit stops. -The opening drop in TRIN (to an amazing 0.00 reading on Lycos) was a foreshadowing of a sell off and reversal. This came on the first trading day of Dec. 2002 | energyi
02/12/2002 17:10 | LONDON (AFX) - Smaller company shares ended the day resoundingly in positive territory and significantly outperforming their blue chip counterparts -- where the weaker-than-expected US ISM data took a hefty toll on sentiment on both sides of the Atlantic, dealers said. At the close, the FTSE Small Cap index was up 15.4 points at 1,934, and just shy of its session high of 1,935. Troubled cable operator Telewest took the top spot -- up 1.32 at 2.87 -- on hopes it will soon reach an agreement with its senior creditors on the terms of a 2 bln stg rescue. Sentiment was also boosted by a wider rally in Tech and Telecom issues after a slew of broker upgrades to Intel ahead of Thursday's mid-quarter update, massive over-subscription to today's T-Online placing and an aggressive upgrade to global mobile handset sales forecasts from heavyweight broker Merrill Lynch. Base Group, the sports management company, also sparkled -- up 0.11 at 0.31 -- after its revenue sharing deal with Italy's GEA World, which will give the UK firm exclusive commercial and transfer rights to 160 Italian footballers. Under the agreement, Base Group will provide a full range of services to professional football players who transfer from Italy to England and take a percentage of any fees it generates from commercial deals, such as sponsorship or lifestyle magazine articles. Pennant International was another winner, up 6 pence at 17-1/2 -- after unveiling upbeat news on current orders, with November at the best levels for over two years. And RMR held onto its gains -- up 1-1/4 at 2-3/4 -- following Friday's news of a reverse takeover of Talent Group and some director share-buying. Shares in Cambridge Mineral Resources also saw good demand, up 2 pence at 11-3/4, after a new study showed improved prospects for its Lomero-Poyatos project in Southern Spain. The new study, compiled by SRK Consulting Ltd, indicated that the project has "robust economic indicators" with an expected internal rate of return of 70 pct, a net present value of about 30 mln eur and a projected net profit of 8.3 mln eur per year. But Digital Classics remained off 0-1/2 pence to 1-1/4 after it revealed a massive widening in full year losses, largely due to the launch and subsequent closure of Digital Classics TV -- which was heavily impacted by the launch of BBC4. The company also warned that it is also examining two "opportunities" to expand its business and increase margins -- both of which may be dilutive to existing shareholders. Elektron was also under pressure, down 1 at 3, after putting its Bulgin Power Source business into voluntary liquidation. The company blamed the decision on mounting losses and a severely weakened market, which has left the unit just not financially viable. And Eagle Eye Telematics fell back -- off 1-1/2 at 10-1/2 -- as followers failed to warm to news of the sale of its 50 pct shareholding in Crime Solutions Ltd, a company involved in developing DNA tagging products. nm/slm/ | mr ashley james

02/12/2002 16:53 | Ruth - the implication is that Barclay's arent expecting a rate cut. Which means either a rate cut is unlikely, or Barclays have got it wrong. I bank with Barclays - so the only treasury figures I have to hand are those quoted by them. Gausie | gausie

02/12/2002 16:46 | A bit of a nothing day really. MKS and PSON out for small losses, failed to get filled on BT and then saw a decent auction spike, but SIA ticked up nicely again. We'll see if it can get a new high tomorrow. Saw so many sell signals earlier and didn't believe them - stooooopid! Trade what you see, Al! Will pop by later to see hoe the US continued, but it got a bit mired today. Pullback worth longing or something more serious? Must decide. | big al 39
