The foolishness of the energy windfall tax has now been proven

Cuts in North Sea production mean that the UK’s potential oil and gas resources have been downgraded by 500 million barrels

The impact of windfall taxes on North Sea oil and gas exploration has turned out to be every bit as disastrous as critics predicted. More than 90 per cent of offshore firms are cutting investment, driven away by a raid on profits and the uncertain future caused by political meddling.

Successive governments, in pursuit of “net zero”, have deliberately presided over the decline in North Sea extraction in order to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions while switching to renewables. However, oil and gas are still needed, and were being imported reasonably cheaply until the Ukraine war changed the economics completely.

The boe knows that the recent ‘banking crisis’ is largely a storm in a tea-cup completely overblown to create trading opportunities. It therefore rightly continues business as usual to fight inflation most of which is now being caused by greedy opportunism of our food and drink industry.

Chocolate and sweets prices now surge before Easter. It’s all invented reasons to hide a simple cash raid/mugging of consumers.

Earnings at Barclays’ Irish unit fall, contactless payments surge and WFH debate rumbles on

The Irish unit of Barclays, which has become the British bank’s post-Brexit European Union hub, saw its earnings fall by more than half last year as it set aside €167 million of net provisions for potential loan losses amid a weakening European economy.

The latest annual report for Barclays Bank Ireland shows that its net profit fell by 57 per cent to €100 million, even as total income grew by 19.5 per cent to €1.43 billion. Joe Brennan has the details.
