12/5/2010 10:08 | Will be interesting to see if new banking minister Vince Cable looks at Barclays' alleged punting operation with Universa Investments and its alleged role in DJI collapse last Thursday? | diogenes dottle
12/5/2010 10:07 | Finally they should break up the Monopolies Commission. | isis

12/5/2010 09:42 | Any views on Barclays alleged involvement in last Thursday's DJI collapse? WSJ "Did big bet in US help trigger a 'Black Swan' stock swoon?" pages 16 & 17 today. Article alleges that Universa Investments spent $7.5M to buy through Barclays 50,000 options in what is summarised by the paper as a bet that the S&P would fall to 800 in June, which if correct would pay off nearly $1B. The story then goes on to allege that Barclays had to sell to protect its own position. I don't know if or to what extent the story is correct (indeed story says on p16 that contracts bought in Chicago options trading pit but later on p17 that they were bought through Barclays trading desks ? ) and in my view usually best to assume that all facts are not usually as stated in media. Indeed we have had many explanations for last Thursday. Still - any views on our friendly retail bank / casino / bookie's latest alleged operation? | diogenes dottle
12/5/2010 09:27 | Vince Cable is one thing - MP for Twickenham. Zak Goldsmith is another - MP for nearby Richmond Park. Zak is going to be influential in the next couple of years (provided he keeps his underpants on). | wenlynn
12/5/2010 09:26 | Better still, break up sky news's Alan Boulton before he explodes all over our screens. I've had to buy a wide screen TV to watch him on Sky News, but he's still getting bigger and more boring every time he appears on screen! | frequentbuyer
12/5/2010 09:14 | Break up the MET OFFICE | gcom2
12/5/2010 09:12 | Vince Cable should break up the BBC. | isis
12/5/2010 09:08 | Would Peston see anything but the down side of this, in fact the BBC have been trying to create issues between the Cons & Libdems ever since they were first told of the alliance! Problem with news reporters these days, is that they seem to think they are there to create the news rather than simply report it!!! | frequentbuyer
12/5/2010 09:06 | BUSINESS/BANKING - VINCE CABLE Vince Cable Vince Cable has had a long journey to reach the front rank of politics, having first been a Labour and then SDP supporter before its merger with the Liberals to become the Liberal Democrats. An economist by trade, he entered Parliament as MP for Twickenham in 1997 and has gradually built up his powerbase among the Lib Dems. As the party's deputy leader and Treasury spokesman he saw his stock rising during the credit crunch because of his earlier warnings about . When he stood in as temporary leader after the resignation of Sir Menzies Campbell, he memorably described Gordon Brown as going from "Stalin to Mr Bean". He is expected to have some sort of Treasury/business job, probably including some brief to oversee the banking system. It is not yet clear what the title of the post will be. | qipincha
12/5/2010 09:02 | There'll be an independent commission to look at whether the big so-called universal banks, such as Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland, should be broken up, so that the more speculative investment banking activities would be formally hived off. This is consistent with the Tories' manifesto position, but Mr Cable is more enthusiastic about breaking up the banks than Mr Osborne. | jon827
12/5/2010 08:23 | Yer sounds about right but i think if you choose Limit order it will only open in your favour | jon827
12/5/2010 08:14 | doddy, depends on your s/b company but generally if the price gaps above or below your order at open, then your order will be filled at the next closest available price. eg yesterday close 278p, you place buy order at 280p, price opens at 290p, your order will get filled around 290p unless you cancel it before it gets filled. Works the same for stoplosses as well unless they are guaranteed. | dow trader majorca
12/5/2010 08:00 | Yesterday and 12 June. FTSE will end 100 points up today. | wenlynn

12/5/2010 07:57 | i see these are ex div when were the dates buy and payments thanks anyone | squash90
12/5/2010 07:55 | I think you would get a better answer on the FTSE thread doddy, I think it will have somthing to do with the type of order you open (stop/limit) Im sure with ig you only get triggered if the price hits the price you specify, but could be wrong | jon827
12/5/2010 07:49 | Robert, If I was still married I would not have any money ! Anyway WOOO HOOO ! | wenlynn
12/5/2010 07:48 | Thanks Gcom had a look at that guide but still doesnt answer my question. Take for example the big barclays jump last monday, they opened up 40 odd points, if I put a spread in on Sunday evening would it have triggered monday morning and at what price? thanks in advance | dodd5y
12/5/2010 07:37 | Wenlynn if you are married its double that for IHT (1 each and transferable) | robertfaulkner
12/5/2010 07:24 | Ken, I'm hoping that IHT will be increased from £325,000 in the next budget. I know £1 million has been ruled out but £325,000 is laughable. | wenlynn |
